Lowe designs and manufactures engineered material handling systems for some of the UK’s most demanding industrial sectors, including nuclear, defence, rail, automotive, construction, heavy engineering, and energy. We specialise in bespoke handling systems where operational failure is not acceptable — including lifting frames, transport stillages, structural handling assemblies, secure storage systems, and safety-critical fabricated equipment operating within highly regulated environments.
Our business is evolving beyond traditional fabrication into digitally driven engineered handling systems, combining advanced mechanical design with automation, parametric modelling, AI-assisted workflows, and configurable engineering platforms. We are seeking an experienced engineer capable of helping drive that transformation.
This is not a traditional drawing office role. You will work at the intersection of:
- mechanical engineering

You will be responsible for developing engineered handling systems while also helping build the next generation of Lowe’s automated engineering capability using tools such as:
- SolidWorks
- DriveWorks
- design automation systems
- configurable CAD logic
- AI-assisted engineering workflows
The role combines practical engineering judgement with systems thinking and digital engineering development.
Responsibilities
- Design engineered handling systems and fabricated assemblies for high-risk industrial applications
- Develop detailed SolidWorks models, manufacturing drawings, and fabrication data
- Carry out engineering calculations including load paths, lifting considerations, stability, and structural assessments
- Support the development of parametric design systems and configurable product logic
- Assist in implementing DriveWorks and CAD automation workflows
- Improve engineering efficiency, standardisation, and design repeatability
- Work closely with fabrication, estimating, and production teams
- Support compliance with UKCA/CE requirements and regulated-industry expectations
- Contribute to long-term AI and engineering systems development within the business
Requirements
- Strong experience in mechanical design engineering within fabrication, material handling, lifting equipment, or engineered industrial products
- Advanced SolidWorks capability
- Experience or strong interest in design automation, DriveWorks, configurable CAD systems, or engineering workflow optimisation
- Understanding of fabrication methods, welding, steel structures, and manufacturing constraints
- Strong practical engineering judgement
- Comfortable working on bespoke and technically challenging projects
- Systems-thinking mindset with interest in improving engineering processes and automation
- Experience in regulated or safety-critical industries advantageous
