Oversees the maintenance and appearance of the grounds and facilities. Ensures that needed supplies are available and housed in a manner that is organized and safe. Ensures that all equipment and machinery used to maintain the facility is in good working condition.
Essential Duties:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive facilities management strategy that supports the operational goals of the LASPCA.
- Oversee all aspects of maintenance, repairs, and facility improvements, ensuring consistent delivery of standards across all locations.
- Recruit, lead, mentor, and develop the Facilities team with a focus on continuous improvement and scalability. Build training programs that enhance team skills and ensure alignment with LASPCA core values.
- Develop safety protocols and ensure all facilities meet compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Drive a culture of safety and continuous improvement in facility operations.
- Set and approve schedules to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness of maintenance personnel. Assign tasks to facilities team, or outside contractors based on urgency and skill level.
- Build relationships and contracts with vendors providing services including skilled traders, general maintenance employees or outside contractors who construct, maintain, and repair utilities systems, buildings, and equipment, to ensure that operational objectives are met.
- Create, and ensure weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual fleet and maintenance schedules are followed.
- Conduct daily, weekly and monthly walkthroughs to evaluate maintenance and janitorial needs of the facility and address and elevate issues to ensure resolutions are met.
- Maintain all equipment and machinery in good working condition and report any problems to the CFO.
- Ensure that all shelter equipment is kept in working order including the fences and bring to the attention of the CFO any equipment that needs replacing.
- Schedule and ensure vehicles and equipment are properly maintained.
- Responsible for all deliveries, ensuring they are accurate, signed for and properly placed.
- Responsible for cleaning of building – bathrooms, dump trash, change hand sanitizer dispensers and soap dispensers, etc. and daily cleaning of the shelter floors so they are neat and clean (i.e. all hallways, including front lobby areas).
- Part of the organisation's drivers available for local and short distance driving (1 day or less).
- Monitor weather and take appropriate action to provide for animal comfort and security of facility in extremes of weather.
- Maintain on-call status in the event of a maintenance emergency.
- Work with CFO on annual budget for improvements, repairs and maintenance.
- Maintain and manage inventory of disaster supplies and equipment.
- Create and update department Standard Operations Manual.
- Treat all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times, regardless of the situation or circumstance and promote a humane and caring attitude toward all animals.
- Maintain a professional and friendly demeanor and provide good customer service.
- Work courteously and cooperatively with other staff members and volunteers.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding all cases and LA/SPCA information.
- Other duties as requested by the CFO or COO.
Education and/or Experience:
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED; some college preferred.
- Requires at least two years of facility maintenance/janitorial experience.
Minimum Qualifications (or skills and knowledge):
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check and pre-employment physical and substance screening.
- Must possess a valid driver's license, and a clean driving record.
- Position is considered essential during city-wide evacuations (meaning the employee will be required to report to the shelter during an evacuation).
- Problem-solving skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Desired Qualifications (or skills and knowledge):
- Possess a valid forklift certification.
- Possess a CDL.
- Knowledge of OSHA safety requirements.
- Supervisory experience of maintenance/janitorial staff.
Physical Requirements:
- This position is physically demanding and requires a significant amount of bending, reaching and kneeling. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
- Must be able to drive a large capacity vehicle, forklift, and other machinery.
- Should not be allergic to animals; must be able to work around all animals.
- Must be able to work with industrial strength cleaners and disinfectants.
- Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds; push and pull heavy objects; bend, twist, reach; perform strenuous physical activities including frequent walking and running, standing, bending and stooping.
Working Environment: (or Working Conditions)
- Potentially subject to animal bites and scratches.
- Works in an area with a high noise level.
