A vacancy has arisen for a Subwarden to join the existing team within Butler Court Hall of Residence. Applications are invited from postgraduate (doctoral) research students at the University. The post will provisionally start in January 2026.

Accommodation and Catering Arrangements

Free accommodation is available during term time. The accommodation available is single occupancy only and has simple self-catering facilities available. Allowance is made for some free meals during term time.

Duties

Subwardens assist the Warden in the day to day running of the Hall. This may involve pastoral, disciplinary, and administrative duties as well as being involved in social aspects of Hall life. The successful applicant will be part of a team which provides out-of-hours emergency cover in a Hall of around 300 students and will help to ensure the smooth running of the hall.

Personal Attributes

Candidates must display a high level of personal organisational ability, good administrative ability, leadership qualities, be sociable, and a good team player. Subwardens are expected to demonstrate a commitment to the community spirit of the Hall and a willingness to engage with students and Hall life in general. As such the successful applicant would be expected to mix with Hall students where possible and participate in Hall events.

It is very important to find out what you are committing yourself to and to understand what is involved. All applicants are required to find out more about the Hall community as it forms an integral part of the selection process. The successful applicant must be available to attend Subwarden training sessions in early January 2026, and undertake first aid, mental health first aid, and fire safety training when the courses are available.

Application Procedures

It is highly recommended that prospective candidates contact the Warden and the current Subwardens to find out about Hall life and the likely duties during the application process. Interested applicants will be invited to look around and attend a meeting to discuss the post prior to close of applications.

Applicants should not submit a standard University application form. Please submit a Voluntary Subwardenship application form together with an accompanying letter outlining suitability for the post. These are then to be sent directly to the Warden (Ash Casey). Candidates must provide two written references (PhD Supervisors, Director of Studies / Line Manager, Head of Section). Completed application forms should be submitted to the Warden by email by Friday 2nd January 2026. There will also be an opportunity to look round the hall and meet the Warden team on Monday 5th January 2026. Please complete this short form if you are interested in attending, with a view to holding interviews on Friday 9th January 2026. Successful candidates should be ready to take their place in hall at the earliest opportunity.
