Full‑time on‑site position at the Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering, Loughborough University, with a fixed‑term contract ending on 31 December 2026.

Location: Loughborough, United Kingdom.

Overview

The project involves the development, analysis and engineering of advanced bio‑digital system solutions for multidisciplinary applications, including novel diagnostic technologies for health, sport and wellness, consumer electronics and defence. Examples of engineered solutions include digital microfluidics and advanced biosensor materials.

Responsibilities

  • Select and optimise material structures and formulations for device integration, ensuring optimal performance, accuracy and reliability.
  • Conduct material characterization using morphological (AFM, SEM, TEM), electrical, optical, spectroscopic (Raman, UV/Vis, FTIR) and biochemical techniques.
  • Use computational modelling and CAD tools (e.g. Matlab, COMSOL, Abaqus) to support design and optimisation tasks.
  • Acquire, curate and analyse data from field trials, including human or animal subjects.
  • Prepare risk assessments and COSHH forms to maintain a safe laboratory environment.
  • Engage with translational and/or entrepreneurial programmes to exploit research outputs.
  • Communicate results effectively to colleagues and stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Experience in formulation, optimisation and integration of functional materials.
  • Hands‑on experience with analytical equipment in a laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with computational modelling and CAD tools.
  • Experience with data acquisition and analysis from field trials.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety, risk assessment and COSHH procedures.
  • Motivation to participate in translational or entrepreneurial activities (optional).
