School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences

Full Time, 12 Months fixed term contract

This position supports a project funded by the EPSRC Emerge Place Based Impact Accelerator Account. The project involves developing and refining a smartphone app to assess and monitor breathing patterns. This will support improved rehabilitation outcomes for patients with Breathing Pattern Disorder (BPD), a common but under-diagnosed cause of breathlessness. BPD is associated with frightening symptoms, so this project has the potential to transform rehabilitation outcomes and quality of life outcomes for patients.

The role will involve app development for a mobile device to monitor and classify breathing patterns from video data. You will be working alongside the project team to incorporate stakeholder feedback and move the product along the regulatory pathway. Occasional travel will be involved to support meetings with stakeholders and to undertake system testing in clinical environments.

About You

To be successful in this role we are looking for candidates with the following key experience and skills:

  • Experience of mobile device application development
  • Experience of image feature extraction and classification
  • Research background in a relevant area of computer science
  • Ability to programme in Python and / or Kotlin
  • Ability to write clear documentation
  • Well-organised with an ability to work to deadlines
  • Ability to comply with relevant requirements in relation to Research Ethics, Data Protection and Good Clinical Practice
  • Ability to communicate well via presentations and written reports to the project team and collaborators and a variety of professional, clinical and patient stakeholders.
