This role is part of an interdisciplinary project to study the Health and Environmental Impacts of Particulate Emissions from Tyres (HEI-PET). We are looking for an ambitious Postdoctoral Research Associate who would like to contribute to the team’s development of a revolutionary interdisciplinary approach to tyre particulate generation, collection and characterisation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop new methods for tyre wear testing and particulate collection that capture the effect of operating conditions on the morphology and chemical composition of the generated tyre particulates.
  • Identify realistic tyre loading conditions from full vehicle drive-cycle simulations and apply them to Loughborough University’s state-of-the-art outdoor tyre test facility.
  • Develop new methods for collecting and characterising airborne, re-suspended and road-residing particulates, covering size/shape and chemical composition.
  • Conduct testing using Loughborough’s indoor rubber abrasion/friction testers and establish correlations between on-road and in-the-lab behaviour.
  • Collaborate closely with the project team to link particle characteristics with their environmental/health impact.

Qualifications

  • Background in engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience of data acquisition and post-processing.
  • Experience setting up data acquisition hardware and instrumentation such as sensors and signal conditioning systems.
  • Working knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Experience of vehicle and/or tyre testing desirable.
