Full time and hybrid Fixed term, 2 months, starting Sept 1st 2026. This role is part of an interdisciplinary project to study the Health and Environmental Impacts of Particulate Emissions from Tyres (HEI-PET). We are looking for an ambitious Postdoctoral Research Associate who would like to contribute to the team’s development of a revolutionary interdisciplinary approach to tyre particulate generation, collection and characterisation.
This 22-month post will focus on the development of new methods for tyre wear testing and particulate collection that capture the effect of operating conditions on the morphology and chemical composition of the generated tyre particulates. Working as part of an interdisciplinary research team, the successful candidate will identify realistic tyre loading conditions from full vehicle drive-cycle simulations. These will be applied to Loughborough University’s state‑of‑the‑art outdoor tyre test facility.
New methods for collecting and characterising airborne, re‑suspended and road‑residing particulates will be developed, with characterisation covering both their size/shape and chemical composition. The work will involve testing using Loughborough’s indoor rubber abrasion/friction testers and seek to establish correlations between on‑road and in‑the‑lab behaviour. The researcher will also work closely with the rest of the project team to establish links between particle characteristics and their environmental/health impact.
About You:
- A background in engineering or a related discipline
- Experience of data acquisition and post-processing
- Experience of setting-up data acquisition hardware and instrumentation such as sensors and signal conditioning systems
- A working knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink
- Experience of vehicle and/or tyre testing would be desirable
