This is a key role within the Health and Safety Services team; a team of dedicated individuals, committed to supporting the University in driving good health and safety standards, so that no one is harmed by the work undertaken at the University. The University recognises that this is a wide-ranging, specialist area and so further training will be provided for the successful applicant to allow them to fully develop their skills and knowledge.
This role will report through Health and Safety Services, with the main activities being:
- To provide a proactive and professional ‘business partner’ service to one of the University’s largest professional services - Estates and Facilities Management (E&FM) and primarily its Engineering, Maintenance and Sustainability sections, striving for excellence within culture and behaviours.
- As a Health and Safety Advisor, you will play a vital role within the central Health and Safety Service and will help to ensure the delivery of the Health, Safety and Wellbeing strategies through direct work with our university customers and partners.
- Providing professional advice to the E&FM leadership and management teams based on changes to legal requirements or interpretations, incident trends or new, relevant guidance.
- Providing information identified through benchmarking activities to the E&FM leadership and management teams so they are able to make informed decisions regarding health and safety management.
- Providing guidance on the development, maintenance, control and implementation of property/estates related health and safety practice, policies, guidance and training.
- Advising on risk assessments and systems of control for E&FM related issues including permit to work.
- Triaging and investigating incidents and initiating incident reviews where required.
- Interrogating and reporting on incident data - providing safety advice and recommendations as required.
- Developing and managing work-based projects such as the deployment of risk assessment strategies.
- Performing inspections and audits where required.
Applicants must hold a higher level health and safety qualification (e.g. NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent) and need to be able to demonstrate that they have a good understanding of:
- the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations
- the risks associated with ‘hard facilities management’ to include construction project management, contractor management, planned and reactive maintenance.
Additional skills required:
- IT literacy and competence in the use of MS Office
- Strong literacy and numeracy skills
- The ability to work with tact and diplomacy
- The ability to prioritise workload and work alone and in small groups as appropriate.
