This initiative reflects our shared commitment to supporting young people with disabilities in developing essential life skills for greater independence.
As our Independent Travel Coordinator, you’ll be part of the Accessibility and Inclusion function, responsible for designing and delivering a tailored travel training programme for young people in secondary education in Edinburgh.
This is a meaningful and impactful role where you’ll help shape brighter, more independent futures for young people in our communities.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver an Independent Travel Training programme to school pupils in our communities with a mixture of disabilities.
- Working with the students to learn journeys, travelling with students on live service, both in groups and one‑on‑one.
- Represent the Lothian Group with key stakeholders including City of Edinburgh Council, schools/colleges. This will include attending conferences, events, meetings and forums with local schools and charities, with the aim of fostering a strong community and industry presence.
- Capture, process and analyse statistical data for audits and KPI reporting.
- Contribute to initiatives and proposals to ensure continuous improvement for our customers in matters concerning accessibility and inclusion on our services.

- Diversity and Inclusion: Be an ambassador for inclusion, always promote and implement the company’s Diversity Policy and provide regular, timely and informative summaries of diversity information across the business instigating remedial or generative action as appropriate.
- Corporate social responsibility: Uphold, safeguard and promote the reputation and values of the organisation throughout all internal and external business relationships and activities.
Person Specification
- Experience working with children and young people.
- Experience working with people with additional support needs.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Confident in presenting to a group in a way that is fun, engaging and easy to understand.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain good working relationships with colleagues, customers and both internal and external stakeholders.
- Keen initiative and problem‑solving skills.
- Experience of risk assessment and risk management.
- As this post involves working with children and young people, you will be required to join the PVG Scheme (Protection of Vulnerable Groups) or undergo a PVG Scheme update check.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience of Lothian Buses network and services.
- Safeguarding Training.
- Experience of the public sector or local council.
- Experience in teaching or coaching children and young people.
- Knowledge and experience in creating accessible communications including Easy Read Documents.

- This role is a 12‑month fixed term contract.
- Part‑time: 30 hours per week.
- Working 4 days a week, Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm.
