Lorien are currently seeking an experienced Senior Counsel to join a high-profile public sector organisation on an initial 6-month contract. This is a senior, business-facing role offering broad exposure across legal, governance, and strategic activity.
The role will support and deputise for the General Counsel, acting as a key point of contact for legal advice across the organisation. You will play a critical role in ensuring strong corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and effective legal risk management.
Key responsibilities:- Provide timely, commercially focused legal advice across a wide range of areas including corporate governance, public procurement, contract drafting and management, employment law, data protection, FOI/EIR, IT and cyber security, and intellectual property.
- Support the General Counsel in maintaining company-wide governance frameworks, ensuring compliance with all legal, financial, and regulatory requirements.
- Assist in Company Secretary duties, including supporting Board and subcommittee governance processes such as agenda preparation, papers, minutes, and action tracking.
- Contribute to audit and risk oversight, working closely with internal stakeholders to ensure robust controls and reporting.
- Support the development and implementation of organisational strategy, policies, and operating models.
- Assist in managing the wider legal and governance function, including collaboration with business management, audit and risk, and governance teams.
- Advise on regulatory and contractual matters within a complex, highly regulated operating environment.
- Support engagement with government stakeholders and external bodies where required.
- Qualified Solicitor in Scotland with circa 7+ years PQE, gained within a reputable law firm and/or in-house environment.
- Strong background in commercial contracts, corporate governance, and public procurement law.
- Experience working within a complex, highly regulated environment, ideally within the public sector or supporting public sector clients.
- Broad legal expertise with the ability to advise across multiple disciplines and manage competing priorities.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management, and drafting skills.
- Proven ability to operate autonomously while contributing effectively as part of a wider senior team.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capability, with a pragmatic and risk-aware approach.
