A well-known Lloyd’s London Market Insurer is seeking a Senior Underwriting Assistant to join its Reinsurance Operations team in London. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced insurance professional to work closely with underwriters, brokers, and operational teams, providing high-quality underwriting support and ensuring the accurate and timely processing of reinsurance business. The successful candidate will gain broad exposure to the underwriting process while playing a key role in supporting business performance, service delivery, and operational excellence.

As a Senior Underwriting Assistant, you will be responsible for supporting the reinsurance underwriting teams through effective administration, data management, policy processing, and stakeholder engagement. You will also act as a subject matter expert within the team, mentoring colleagues and helping drive process improvements. Key Responsibilities
  • Support Underwriting Assistants and underwriting teams with operational queries and processes.
  • Act as a mentor and provide guidance on procedures and best practice.
  • Assist management with administrative activities, reporting, and meetings.
  • Identify operational issues and recommend process improvements.
  • Represent the underwriting support function in meetings when required.
Underwriting & Operational Support
  • Accurately and efficiently process premiums, policies, endorsements, quotes, renewals, and submissions.
  • Maintain underwriting databases and ensure data quality standards are met.
  • Monitor and manage workload against agreed SLAs and KPIs.
  • Support month-end accounting and reporting activities.
  • Assist with the resolution of transactional issues, including cash allocations, debt management, and signing queries.
  • Ensure document management standards are maintained.
  • Respond promptly to underwriting information requests.
Broker & Stakeholder Management
  • Build strong relationships with underwriters and brokers to ensure service expectations are met.
  • Liaise with brokers to manage accounts and resolve queries.
  • Proactively identify and escalate significant business issues.
  • Support colleagues across Operations, Claims, Risk Engineering, Exposure Management, and Finance functions.
Renewals & Portfolio Support
  • Monitor risks throughout the year and assist with renewal planning.
  • Prepare renewal packs and maintain renewal tracking information.
  • Support underwriting teams with ad hoc requests and portfolio management activities.
Governance & Compliance
  • Support internal and external audit activities.
  • Assist with compliance and management reporting.
  • Ensure adherence to all applicable regulatory requirements, internal policies, and conduct standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive information.
Team Development
  • Deliver formal and informal coaching to team members where appropriate.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, system enhancements, and operational change initiatives.
  • Actively participate in team meetings and knowledge sharing.
  • Support the wider team to achieve quality and service objectives.
Skills & ExperienceEssential
  • Previous insurance experience, ideally within the London Market or Lloyd’s environment.
  • Strong understanding of underwriting support and policy administration processes.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work to tight deadlines.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel.
  • Strong stakeholder management and relationship-building abilities.
Desirable
  • Reinsurance experience.
  • Experience using insurance platforms such as Genius, IRIS, or similar underwriting systems.
  • Experience mentoring or supporting junior team members.
  • Progress towards or interest in obtaining professional insurance qualifications (e.g., ACII).
