Overview
We're supporting a high-profile UK financial institution seeking an experienced Lead Splunk Engineer to join their Observability function on a contract basis. This is a key leadership role focused on shaping monitoring and observability strategy, driving automation, and ensuring best-in-class Splunk practices across a complex enterprise environment.
The Role
As the Lead Splunk Engineer, you will act as a technical authority within the Observability team, leading the design and implementation of scalable monitoring patterns and standards. You will champion an automation-first approach, mentor engineers, and help build long-term capability while collaborating closely with stakeholders across technology teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and implementation of monitoring and observability patterns
- Drive adoption of best practices across Splunk and wider monitoring tooling
- Develop automated solutions using Terraform and version-controlled frameworks (e.g. GitHub)
- Work closely with SMEs to translate requirements into scalable monitoring solutions
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to engineers
- Investigate and leverage new features within the Splunk roadmap
- Support incident investigation and resolution across complex platforms
- Produce clear and maintainable technical documentation
Key Skills & Experience
- Strong experience with Splunk Enterprise and Splunk ITSI (design, implementation, administration)
- Splunk certification with deep hands-on expertise across use cases and operations
- Proven experience building and managing enterprise-scale Splunk platforms
- Experience integrating Splunk with diverse data sources, monitoring tools, and ITSM systems
- Automation experience using Terraform and Git-based workflows
- Strong data analysis and correlation skills across multiple data sources
- Experience configuring Splunk ITSI using REST APIs
- Strong understanding of observability and monitoring technologies
Desirable
- Exposure to tools such as Control-M, xMatters, Jira, Confluence, OpenShift
- Experience with performance tuning, optimisation, and platform troubleshooting
- Knowledge of cloud environments and infrastructure automation
- Familiarity with Agile delivery environments
