Role outline and purpose
To lead and coordinate the provision for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) across the school, ensuring that all pupils with additional needs receive the support they require to make progress and achieve their potential. The SENCO plays a part in strategic planning, assessment, intervention coordination, and liaison with staff, parents, and external agencies.
Role Responsibilities
- Leadership and Management
- Manage and coordinate the day-to-day operation of the SEND policy.
- Oversee the identification and assessment of pupils with SEND.
- Monitor, evaluate, and report on the effectiveness of interventions and support.
- Pupil Support and Progress
- Maintain and update the SEND/EAL register.
- Coordinate provision for pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and those receiving additional support.
- Monitor pupil progress and ensure appropriate adjustments and interventions are in place.
- Contribute to pupil review meetings and annual reviews.
- Liaise with the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) on issues relating to vulnerable pupils.
- Staff Support and Training
- Advise and support colleagues in differentiating the curriculum and implementing effective strategies for inclusion.
- Help to identify staff training needs and help plan and deliver professional development related to additional needs.
- Ensure all staff are aware of individual pupils’ needs and how to support them.
- Liaison and Communication
- Act as the key point of contact for external agencies (e.g., Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, CAMHS).
- Communicate effectively with parents and carers regarding their child’s progress and support.
- Contribute to multi-agency meetings and ensure all paperwork and statutory requirements are completed on time.
- Administration and Compliance
- Ensure the school meets statutory requirements under the SEND Code of Practice (2015).
- Prepare documentation for EHCP applications, reviews, and funding requests.
