The Company
Our client, a leading Logistics provider near March, have exclusively appointed Loom Talent Limited to actively source a Transport Operations & Planning General Manager. Our client is a renowned international player, with over 120+ years of successful trading history and 6+ DC's across the UK&I. The primary focus of this role within the first 6-9 months will be to optimise the UK Transport Planning network, looking at TMS usage, Route Optimisation and Back haul opportunities. The successful candidate will then assume a broader responsibility for the day-to-day Transport operation, whilst working towards a 'Head of Transport' title internally across a c. 18-24 month period.
The Role
As the Transport Operations & Planning General Manager, you will be responsible for the efficient management of the UK Transport Operations & Planning teams. You will oversee day-to-day activities, ensuring compliance, safety, and optimal performance. Additionally, you will manage relationships with sub-contracted vehicle providers, driving both efficiency and excellence in service delivery.
The successful individual will be responsible for:
- Route Planning and Optimisation Management: Assume responsibility for a transport Planning team whilst collectively developing and implementing efficient transport plans that optimise routes, minimise fuel costs, and meet delivery deadlines.
- Delivery & Collection Coordination: Optimise the coordination and daily/weekly delivery schedule to ensure goods are transported on time to meet internal, customer and end retailer demands.
- Fleet Management: Oversee the availability, maintenance, and operational efficiency of vehicles within the transport fleet, ensuring compliance with legal and safety requirements. Working with both in-house VMU teams and external partners will be critical.
- Driver Coordination: Communicate with drivers through your teams, ensuring they are informed of routes, schedules, and any adjustments, while resolving any issues that arise during transport.
- Monitor KPIs: Track key performance indicators (KPIs), such as on-time delivery rates, fuel consumption, and vehicle utilisation, to ensure continuous improvement in transport operations. This reporting will be shared group wide to enhance visibility.
- Customer Service Support: Ensure customers and internal transport department related queries are addressed, ensuring a high standard of service.
- Compliance and Safety Management: Support the senior leadership team and broader Transport team to ensure all transport activities comply with industry regulations, including safety standards, vehicle weight limits, and driver working hours.
- Cost Control and Budgeting: Monitor transport-related expenses, such as fuel, vehicle maintenance, and labour costs, ensuring operations stay within budget.
- Continuous Improvement: Actively review the entire UK Transport & Planning functions with a view to optimising at every opportunity within reason.
- Supply Chain Coordination: Collaborate with warehouse teams, procurement, and supply chain management to ensure transport aligns with stock levels and inventory movement.
- Technology Utilisation: Use transport management systems (TMS), Planning Systems and other relevant software to plan, monitor, and improve transport operations and ensure data accuracy.
The Candidate
The successful candidate for the Transport Operations & Planning General Manager position will possess the following skills and experiences:
- A Logistics Distribution and Supply Chain Background - Essential.
- 5+ years Transport Leadership experience within a medium to large sized transport operation - Essential.
- Exposure to having overseen a Transport Planning function in some capacity previously - Essential.
- Proven experience in managing & routing 100+ vehicles through various multi-site teams - Essential.
- Sub-contract management experience - Highly Advantageous.
- A deep understanding across operation KPI's, finance & overall commerciality - Pence Per Mile, Back haul Operations etc - Essential.
- A CPC National / International qualification, demonstrating your deep understanding of transportation regulations - Essential.
