Transport Shift Manager / Wakefield / £42,500 - £45,000 / Monday - Friday
The Role
This Transport Shift Manager opportunity is with a well-established distribution business based in Wakefield, taking responsibility for the day-to-day performance of a busy transport operation.
The business is looking for a hands-on Transport Shift Manager who can lead from the front, manage drivers and transport colleagues while ensuring service, compliance and operational performance remain at a consistently high level.
Working closely with warehousing and the wider Logistics distribution and supply chain function, you'll be responsible for keeping the operation moving, reacting to live challenges and creating a positive, accountable culture across the transport team.
Key Responsibilities
- Leading the day-to-day transport
- operation across a Monday to Friday shift pattern
- Managing, coaching and developing drivers and transport colleagues
- Overseeing driver briefings, debriefs and daily operational activity
- Monitoring delivery performance, vehicle utilisation and customer service levels
- Responding to live operational issues and ensuring disruption is managed effectively
- Ensuring full compliance with drivers' hours, Working Time Directive and transport legislation
- Monitoring transport KPIs and identifying opportunities to improve service, efficiency and cost
- Working closely with warehouse and wider Logistics distribution and supply chain teams to ensure seamless operational delivery
- Supporting transport planning and ensuring resource is effectively utilised
- Driving a culture of safety, accountability and continuous improvement
Key Experience
- Previous experience as a Transport Shift Manager, Transport Manager, Transport Supervisor or similar operational leadership role
- Strong experience leading drivers and transport teams within a fast-paced distribution environment
- Good understanding of transport legislation, drivers' hours and operational compliance
- Experience managing transport KPIs across service, cost and fleet utilisation
- Background within retail, 3PL, FMCG or high-volume distribution would be advantageous
- Strong people management skills with the ability to coach and develop operational teams
- Experience working within a Logistics distribution and supply chain environment
- A proactive, hands-on leadership style with the ability to make decisions in a live transport operation
