We provide housing and a range of support services to adults with low or no income who have few, if any, housing or support options. Because the people we serve have challenges meeting basic needs and goals, we place minimal barriers between them and our services. Location: Gateway Shelter

Shifts will be from Monday - Friday, 09:00 - 17:00

Salary: $19.85 per hour

Position Summary: Gateway Shelter is offering a dynamic and meaningful summer student opportunity for individuals passionate about social justice, community service, and supporting vulnerable populations. Our mission is to provide compassionate care and connect individuals experiencing homelessness and addiction with essential resources and support services. Through this role, students will gain practical skills and a deeper understanding of the systemic challenges facing marginalized populations. This is an excellent opportunity for those seeking to build a foundation in social work, public health, or community-based services, while making a lasting and positive impact. The position is temporary and for 8 weeks.

Job Duties:

  • Provide assistance, support and basic skill training to clients while encouraging independence, self-responsibility and healthiest lifestyle.
  • Assist support workers with the intake of clients, provide services of support, assessment, liaising, isolate problems, develop service plans, crisis intervention, and generally ensure that basic needs are met.
  • Assist with paperwork and statistical data.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Enrollment in a Social Work, Mental Health or Criminal Justice program is preferred.
  • Must have current Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certificate.
  • Must have two doses of COVID-19 Vaccine.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Skills Training is an asset.
  • Must pass a satisfactory Criminal Record Check.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Ability to manage high workload with multiple priorities.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
