Today, Lonza is a global leader in life sciences operating across five continents. While we work in science, there’s no magic formula to how we do it. Our greatest scientific solution is talented people working together, devising ideas that help businesses to help people. In exchange, we let our people own their careers. Their ideas, big and small, genuinely improve the world. And that’s the kind of work we want to be part of.

The role: At Lonza, the Lead Scientist is an expert in Biacore and will play a crucial role in leading the development, optimisation, and troubleshooting of Biacore/Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) methods. As a key member of the laboratory team, this individual will work on multiple complex projects, addressing challenging technical issues and ensuring high-quality execution of experiments in compliance with safety and quality standards. The Lead Scientist will be responsible for identifying and implementing technical and operational improvements, collaborating closely with customers to address complex issues, understanding their needs, planning experiments that align with customer expectations, presenting progress updates on project milestones, and responding to customer inquiries. This is a perfect opportunity to join a team of circa 80 team members, to work on cutting-edge complex experiments and to support more junior colleagues to plan and execute their projects!

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead and take full responsibility for the successful delivery of multiple projects, including maintaining and detailing project dashboards.
  • Coach, mentor, and train junior members of the department as required.
  • Take ownership of crafting customer proposals, including the technical content and estimation of work days needed.
  • Review and draft reports to meet an agreed standard, ensuring they are suitable for final review by the Head of Department.
  • Ensure flawless execution of experiments and projects, strictly adhering to safety and quality standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver world-class solutions.

Key requirements:

  • A BSc or equivalent experience in a relevant scientific/technical subject area.
  • Proven experience in using Biacore with techniques such as SPR, ELISA/plate-based methods, and cell-based methods.
  • Experience in the implementation of high-throughput automated methods and digitisation of processes would be an advantage.
  • Proven experience of working in a regulatory environment, ideally Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) or a Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls (CMC) environment.
  • Outstanding organisational and communication skills, with the ability to effectively determine project priorities and meet deadlines.
