ABOUT US
At Longdue, we make narrative-first, psychologically deep RPGs. Our focus is real depth— in our characters, environments, and the stories we tell. We’re here to challenge your choices, your morality—everything you think you know. We’re here to make games where decisions matter and have consequences. We're building on the legacy of foundational story-driven RPGs and joining the modern classics as we step into the future. Our goal is simple: be a trusted name in the greater RPG canon. We’re Longdue, and we’re here to leave our mark.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We’re looking for a Technical Director to spearhead the technical vision of our studio and lead the creation of something truly bold. This is a hands-on role that will allow you to build the technical foundation of a major narrative-driven RPG from the ground up. You’ll be instrumental in shaping the systems, tools, and technologies that bring our ambitious vision to life. As a founding team member, you will collaborate with creative and leadership teams to craft a game that challenges conventions and pushes the boundaries of storytelling in RPGs. You’ll guide our technical direction and ensure that our focus on psychologically deep, player-driven experiences is realised through innovative and scalable technology.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Refine the Technical Vision: Shape the technology stack further (Unity, Articy), game architecture, and long-term strategy that will drive the creation of our narrative-first, emotionally complex cRPG - Hopetown.
- Hands-On Development: Roll up your sleeves and contribute to the creation of core game systems, tools, and pipelines that will set the stage for our future projects.
- Build a Team of Innovators: Recruit, mentor, and lead a technical team passionate about storytelling and gameplay systems that have real depth and meaning, including some of the original team that worked on Disco Elysium.
- Solve Complex Challenges: Dive into the toughest technical problems, from optimising performance to creating systems that can handle the weight of player-driven choices and consequences.
- Collaborate Across Teams: Work closely with design, art, and production teams to ensure that our technical solutions empower the creative vision and push boundaries in meaningful ways.
- Ensure Quality and Scalability: Lead code reviews, maintain high coding standards, and ensure the game runs smoothly across platforms without sacrificing the depth we aim for.
- Build Tools and Pipelines for Success: Develop tools that enhance workflow efficiency, ensuring that every team member has what they need to bring our game to life.
- Embrace Evolution: Be flexible and adaptive as priorities shift, and take ownership of technical risks and challenges as the studio grows.
REQUIREMENTS
- Game Development Expertise: Extensive experience in a senior or lead technical role within the gaming industry, ideally with narrative-heavy or RPG titles and a ‘2.5D’ art style of the kind seen in Disco Elysium, Rue Valley, and similar games.
- Technical Art Experience: Strong familiarity with Unity Render Pipeline (URP) and a passion for 2.5D workflows. Demonstrated ability to develop and support art pipelines and workflows, optimising performance across assets and ensuring content is brought into the engine smoothly.
- Shipped Titles: Experience shipping at least one commercial game on PC and/or console, preferably in the RPG or narrative-driven genre.
- Hands-On Technical Skills: Deep coding knowledge with the ability to actively contribute to development while guiding the team.
- RPG Experience (Preferred): Experience working on RPGs or narrative-driven games with complex character systems or player agency is highly desirable.
- Leadership and Mentorship: Proven ability to lead, inspire, and mentor a team of technical developers, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.
- Problem-Solving Mastery: Strong technical problem-solving skills, especially in areas like optimisation and multi-platform scalability.
- Familiarity with Key Technologies: Expertise in modern game engines (e.g., Unity, Articy), programming languages, and development tools to bring depth to the technical systems.
- Agile and Toolset Mastery: Experience with Agile methodologies and tools such as Perforce, Plastic SCM, or SVN, and build systems that streamline development.
- Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Excellent communication and teamwork skills to work effectively with creative teams and ensure that technical choices serve the game’s storytelling depth.
