Requirements

  • Broad experience of software and cloud engineering in large, complex organizations.
  • Deep understanding of modern engineering practices (DevOps, Cloud Infrastructure, CICD, Testing, Observability etc) and IT service management (ITSM) enabled by a modern engineering tooling ecosystem.
  • Hands-on experience with coding, and the ability to solve problems using common engineering tools e.g. GitHub/GitLab, Python, Java, Go, PowerBI, SQL, GitHub Copilot etc.
  • A passion for driving and delivering operational efficiencies.
  • Experience working for a large, complex organisation where decisions and actions are highly federated.
  • Solid skills in leading and managing communities of internal stakeholders, fostering collaboration and driving the adoption of strategic standards and ways of working.

What the job involves

As a Lead in the Engineering Practices team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and advancing engineering practices across the organisation. This varied position covers many aspects of engineering, including Cloud, Software Development, DevOps, CICD, Observability and Operations, ensuring our engineering practices are fit-for-purpose and ensuring best practices are adopted throughout our teams.

Key responsibilities of this role will be to drive initiatives around operational practices, including FinOps, Observability, Resilience and Operational Automation. Driving operational cost efficiency initiatives across the Group will be a critical outcome.

Success in this role will be measured by increased operational efficiency, as measured by metrics that you will need to develop and build. You will collaborate with senior leaders, engineers, and cross-functional teams, providing thought leadership and mentoring to support the professional development and growth of our engineering community.

Develop strategies, then steer and monitor the delivery of key parts of our Engineering Practices, as needed. Key focus area for this role will be Operational practices - including FinOps, Observability, Resilience and Operational Automation.

Lead the evolution and adoption of engineering practices across the organisation, ensuring methodologies remain up-to-date and effective, particularly in support of AI initiatives.

Lead initiatives to drive operational cost efficiency across the Group, in areas such as Cloud, Software Licencing, Infrastructure Decommissioning, and Automation.

Define and build metrics to measure operational efficiency across the Group.

Collaborate closely with senior leaders, engineers, and cross-functional teams to provide thought leadership, mentorship, and support for professional growth within the engineering community.
