The role of Mental Health Adviser is part of a small and friendly Student Support Services department which comprises counselling, student advice (disability, general advice, financial hardship, accommodation), careers service and Chaplaincy. The role holder will work as part of the wider Student Support Services team in providing both reactive and proactive support to students.
The Mental Health Adviser's main focus is in responding to the mental health and wellbeing needs of School-based students including those with a diagnosed mental health condition. This role involves contact with students and applicants, case working individual support, making recommendations for academic adjustments and assisting students with access to NHS and specialist support services as well as triaging and making referrals to other LSHTM staff as necessary.
You should be educated to a degree level or equivalent (qualified by experience) and have a professional qualification in a relevant clinical or healthcare discipline (e.g. Nursing, Social Work, Counselling/Psychotherapy, Clinical Psychology, Occupational Therapy etc.). You should also hold experience in crisis intervention/responding to mental health crises and experience, or knowledge of the issues of working in a Higher Education context.
The post is full-time 35 hours per week, 1 FTE and permanent. This role is available from 1 August 2026. The salary will be on the LSHTM salary scale, Grade 6 in the range £45,728 - £51,872 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London.
