The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is one of the world’s leading public health universities. We are seeking to appoint a dynamic and experienced Clinical Assistant Professor for this exciting position supporting a project funded by a Better Methods Better Research award from the Medical Research Council (MRC). The study aims to develop novel methods to consider commercial factors that may influence evidence synthesis, by undertaking multiple reviews on public health research across multiple commercially sensitive domains, including electronic cigarettes, alcohol, and medical devices.
Systematic reviews are a key method for synthesising evidence on the impacts of commercial determinants and on the strategies and processes by which they exert their effects, but as yet no CDOH-specific review methods exist. This role will be based in the Department of Public Health, Environments and Society (PHES).
Applicants must have a doctoral degree in a relevant topic and be registered with the GMC or the UK Public Health Register (UKPHR). UK trained applicants must also be a holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by the date of interview. Applicants must also have experience in public health, methods research, including qualitative and quantitative evidence synthesis (umbrella reviews, systematic reviews, scoping reviews) and meta-analysis, and considerable experience in the Commercial Determinants of Health (CDoH).
The role will also involve supporting the organisation and management of a Delphi process and qualitative interviews, so applicants should be experienced in organising and managing Delphi or similar processes, or feel confident learning these methods rapidly, and have familiarity with qualitative interviews and their analysis.
Overall, the role will require outputs to be translated into policy-relevant reports so the appointed candidate will be liaising with the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) over forthcoming guidance and to support OHID’s broader priorities. The work is therefore envisaged to involve 2 Academic PAs for LSHTM and one Clinical PA for OHID (remote working).
The post is fixed term ending on 31st October 2026 and part-time 12 hours per week, 0.3 FTE. The post is funded by the MRC and is available from 1st April 2025. The salary for a medically qualified individual will be to the point of the consultant salary scale (2003 contract) for England appropriate to their years of seniority pro-rata in the range ÂŁ105,504 to ÂŁ139,882 plus ÂŁ2,162 London allowance pro rata or if from a background other than medicine to an equivalent Agenda for Change Band 8d. The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service.
Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part-time staff. In addition to this, there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London at LSHTM.
