Job overview
The post holder will be responsible for the medical care of non-NOF patients over the age of 60 years old who need to be reviewed by a Geriatrician within 72 hours of admission as per recommended best practice fractures and will work alongside the existing Orthogeriatrician. There is also scope within the job plan for further service development. This will be agreed with the successful candidate, though it is anticipated this will involve improving patient care within the surgical directorate.
The post is based at Ealing Hospital and the post holder is expected to assist in the development of innovative Orthogeriatrics service. The aim is to develop the existing Orthogeriatric service and in particular support the care of elderly patients admitted to the hospital with fragility fractures. The appointee will play a key role in the development of the services and contribute to acute care of Orthogeriatric patients and provide medical support to the treatment plan and discharge planning.
JD is pending Royal College approval.
Main duties of the job
- The post holder will be based on the Ortho ward at Ealing Hospital and be medically responsible for Orthopaedics patients on that ward alongside the existing Orthopaedics Consultants and Orthogeriatrician (approximately 10-15 patients each). On occasion, there may be medical outliers on wards who will also be looked after by the medical Consultants based there. When bed pressures are extreme, there are Orthopaedics patients on other surgical wards and the post-holder will also be expected to review those patients. This post holder should be able to give routine advice on younger people under the Orthopaedics teams and then if needed signpost them to more specialist medical teams.
- Deliver care alongside the existing orthogeriatrics team to develop the orthogeriatrics service, ensuring our elderly trauma patients receive the best possible treatment to optimise patient outcomes.
- Provide oversight and clinical supervision for junior doctors attached to your team, alongside the Physician Associate Clinical Nurse Specialist. The post holder will be the educational supervisor for up to 3 trainees per year.
- Carry out a follow-up clinic from Orthopaedics discharges clinic. There will be opportunity to develop an area of sub-speciality (e.g., bone health, continence, ‘hot’ clinics). Typical clinic numbers are 5 new and 4 follow-up patients.
