The Finance Assistant placement:
Are you looking for a Year-in-Industry placement before you complete your studies that will give you a strong foundation for a future career in finance? LNER is offering a 12-month placement to someone starting in September 2026, where you will join our Business Services directorate, a diverse, fast-paced team of around 130 colleagues.
Within Business Services, our Finance team plays a key role in supporting the financial responsibilities of LNER and supporting our colleagues with responsible financial decision making. We have a strong mix of skills and experience in the team, which helps to deliver the clear financial responsibilities to the Department for Transport, under our Services Agreement.
Throughout the year, you will gain broad exposure across Finance and Business Services, including:
- Rotations across key areas such as Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Financial Reporting, Audit & Risk, and Procurement
- Supporting the production of financial reports and analysis to inform business decisions
- Contributing to budgeting, forecasting, and period-end management accounts
- Taking part in process improvement initiatives to help us work smarter
- Building strong professional relationships and experiencing how finance operates within a major transport organisation

Requirements
- A strong academic record, ideally working towards a degree in accountancy or finance.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- A proactive and enthusiastic attitude with a willingness to learn.
Interview
Candidates who are offered an interview will be invited to West Offices @ Station Rise, York YO1 6GA to meet with us on either Thursday, 26th February, or Friday, 27th February. In addition to a discussion and answering our interview questions, we will ask you to prepare a short 15 minute presentation about yourself and your skills (details will be provided). Candidates shortlisted after interview will be invited to an informal discussion before an offer is made.
