DEPARTMENT: Airfield Operations

REPORTS TO: Operations Duty Manager

WORK PATTERNS: 42 hours per week including rotating and alternating shift patterns

JOB PURPOSE SUMMARY: Reporting to the Operations Duty Manager, the role of an Operations Safety Officer is to work as part of a team involved in carrying out the tasks of the Airfield Operation Department. The department’s primary responsibility is to maintain an environment that is safe for use by aircraft. The position is primarily airside based; however, not all tasks are restricted to the airside environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Be fully accountable for delivering Operational Safety Excellence.
  • Monitoring, assessment and enforcement of agreed safety standards through active engagement with all airside users.
  • Monitoring and recording of Safety Assurance Controls inclusive of Near Miss reporting ensuring appropriate intervention and engagement in instances of safety deviations.
  • Promotion of a Just and Fair Culture in accordance with the Safety Management System.
  • Delivery of standards and performance in accordance with published Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s).
  • Assist in the maintenance and development of the airside Safety Management System (SMS).
  • Provide an emergency response in accordance with the Emergency Orders.
  • Partake in all training associated with the role of Operations Assistant and cooperate on the attendance of training days when off duty given reasonable notice.
  • Assist in all duties in accordance with the SMS and comply with all reasonable requests from the supervisory management team.
  • Conduct scheduled and Ad Hoc Controls and inspections using the departments SMS Platform, Ops com.
  • Deliver on the Vision & Mission and LLA Brand Values.
  • Provide airside coaching services ensuring all vehicles are professionally operated.
  • Ensure vehicles and equipment are maintained to a high standard of cleanliness.
  • Comply with instructions, procedures and processes.
  • Escorting and monitoring of contractors airside.
  • Provide ‘Follow Me’ service as required including the marshalling of aircraft.
  • Operate machinery and equipment for the purpose of winter operations inclusive of articulated snow brushes, Ramp Hogs, de-icing equipment, mechanical sweepers, granule spreaders and undertake manual snow clearing where required (Provision will be made for training and licensing to HGV Class 2).
  • Operate machinery and equipment associated with summer operations (Habitat Management) inclusive of mowers, strimmers and handheld equipment for the purpose of removing self-seeding trees or scrub and maintaining an airfield unattractive to wildlife.
  • Provide forklift services to both internal and external parties (Provision will be made for forklift training and licensing).
  • Contribute to the maintenance of Health, Safety and Environmental accreditations.
  • Undertake line marking duties as required.
  • Provide assistance within the airport environment i.e., Cargo Operations.
  • Contribute to delivering great guest experience by performing your role with accuracy and efficiency. Recognising that every task, whether guest facing or behind the scenes contributes to supporting the company’s overall LLA Way Strategy and service standards.
  • Proactively and positively promote the LLA Way initiatives and projects with all employees and the wider airport community.

Regulation regarding airfield operations and particularly safety management are constantly changing as are the demands of our aviation business partners; therefore, the accountabilities listed above are for illustration purposes only and are not exhaustive.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

The candidate will have a positive outlook and attitude, will be capable of identifying and resolving problems and possess good organisational skills. As a prospective candidate, you will be capable of working on your own initiative as well as part of a team. You will be task-oriented, able to communicate well with all stakeholders, be customer-focused and capable of delivering excellent service against agreed organisational objectives.

The nature of the operation demands an adaptable persona willing to learn and encompass new tasks as well as being keen in assisting the development of both the department and operation as a whole.

As the role involves IT-based tasks, a good working knowledge of computer systems and programmes is ideal. The ideal candidate is expected to hold and have some experience and knowledge in the following:

  • Candidates should ideally hold an AOA recognised ADP/MADP.
  • A valid UK Category B Driving License and have a minimum of 2 years driving experience.
  • A PCV License is desirable but not essential as training will be provided.
  • Experience of airfield operations and apron activities.
  • Possess Radio Telephony skills to CAP 413 standard.
  • Be familiar with a regulated working environment.
  • Have an awareness of Safety and Emergency procedures.
  • An understanding of Aerodromes (Regulation 139).
  • An understanding of applicable Civil Aviation Authority publications such as CAP Manuals 772, 790, 642 and 637.
  • An understanding of the use of auditing and reporting systems is desirable.
