As the Fire Safety Officer at London Luton Airport, you will support the Fire Safety Manager in ensuring compliance with fire safety legislation, emergency preparedness, resilience, and response across the airport. Your primary responsibility will be to manage, coordinate, and implement robust fire prevention measures, including fire safety inspections, audits, risk assessments, and emergency planning. You will work closely with multiple stakeholders, including the London Luton Airport Fire Safety Team, operational teams, and third-party providers, to ensure best practices in fire safety management. You will also support the implementation of a Fire Safety Management System in accordance with BS9997 and relevant legal regulations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Provide expert advice on fire safety legislation and guidance, including the Building Safety Act 2024, BS9997, BS9999, and BS9991.
  • Support the Fire Safety Manager in the review and implementation of fire risk assessments, ensuring that all actions are addressed promptly.
  • Help to develop, review, and update fire safety policies, procedures, and emergency response plans.
  • Conduct fire safety inspections, audits, and fire drills, ensuring compliance across all airport zones and facilities.
  • Support the planning and execution of terminal evacuation exercises, aligning with the airport’s operational schedule.
  • Investigate fire-related incidents, fire alarm activations, and near misses, implementing corrective actions where necessary.
  • Deliver engaging fire safety training to employees, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively with all LLA Departments and stakeholders to maintain a safe environment.
  • Assist in the implementation and ongoing management of the Fire Safety Management System in line with BS9997.
  • Support third-party audits and fire safety consultancy engagements.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to internal teams and contractors, ensuring fire safety compliance in construction, refurbishment, and maintenance projects, including high-risk activities such as hot works.
  • Review, issue, and oversee compliance with hot works permits, conducting inspections and audits to verify adherence to airport fire safety protocols.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Essential:

  • A NEBOSH GenCert or similar qualification in risk management.
  • Experience conducting risk assessments, inspections, and audits.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Experience in delivering training and promoting a strong safety culture.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams, including Health & Safety, Estates, Projects, Commercial, Technical Services, and Fire Safety Teams.
  • Proficiency in using reporting systems for tracking deficiencies and ensuring compliance.
  • Flexible, proactive, and solutions-focused approach to fire safety management.

Desirable:

  • Level 4 qualification in Fire Safety (or equivalent) with proven experience in fire safety within large-scale, high-footfall environments (e.g., transport hubs, commercial properties, or critical infrastructure).
  • Strong understanding of emergency preparedness, resilience, and response, including developing and implementing evacuation procedures.
  • In-depth knowledge of fire safety legislation, British Standards (BS9997, BS9999, BS9991), and the Building Safety Act 2024.
