The Role

We are seeking a skilled and experienced in-house lawyer to join our Legal & Claims team within Howden CAP. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in banking and insurance law, with a good understanding of credit risk mitigation and relevant regulations.

The successful candidate will be expected to assist in:

  • Interpreting and solving complex legal and regulatory problems across multiple jurisdictions;
  • Actively engaging with other brokers in structuring and executing all forms of risk transfer transactions, including but not limited to negotiating with insurers to secure favourable terms for the business, our clients and drive best practices;
  • Representing the company in industry forums and at conferences.

The successful candidate will be proactive in engaging with the broader Howden CAP team on legal and regulatory changes and will play a vital role in supporting clients on balance sheet and capital optimization strategies.

What you’ll do

  • Regulatory Monitoring: Assist with the continuous monitoring of the regulatory environment, help interpret changes, and assess their impact on client business models and balance sheets.
  • Regulatory Updates: Help prepare and deliver monthly and bespoke regulatory updates, ensuring our business is informed of relevant changes and developments.
  • Client Support: Assist and develop the business in supporting clients in relation to all forms of on balance sheet and capital optimization strategies, ensuring compliance with current and upcoming regulatory requirements.
  • Deal Assistance: Assist the business teams in structuring complex deals, providing support and ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks.
  • Negotiation Support: Support negotiations with insurers, helping to secure favourable terms and ensuring alignment with best practices.
  • Industry Representation: Assist in representing the company at industry forums and conferences, building the company's profile within the industry.
  • Proactive Engagement: Proactively engage with internal teams and contribute to discussions on legal and regulatory changes, helping the company stay ahead of industry developments.
  • Strategic Collaboration: Work with strategic advisors, including law firms, bankers, and consultants, to help develop and implement solutions that optimize clients' use of capital and insurance.
  • Innovative Solutions: Collaborate with the broader Howden CAP team to help design and deliver unique approaches, innovative products, and tailored solutions for clients.
  • Alternative Capital Vehicles: Support the development and structuring of alternative capital vehicles, ensuring compliance and efficiency.
  • Team Support: Assist members of the team, providing support and contributing to overall team objectives.

Who we’re looking for

  • Legal Qualification: Candidates which are qualified lawyers with backgrounds in financial banking and insurance law will be preferred.
  • Credit Insurance Policies: Good understanding of credit risk mitigation and relevant regulations.
  • Banking Regulations: Knowledge of banking regulations and the regulatory environment, including future regulatory changes.
  • Problem Solving: Ability to assist in solving complex legal and regulatory problems.
  • Negotiation Support: Experience in supporting negotiations with insurers to secure favourable terms for clients and drive best practices.
  • Industry Representation: Some experience representing organizations at industry forums and conferences.
  • Proactive Engagement: Ability to engage proactively with internal teams and stay ahead of legal and regulatory changes.
  • Regulatory Updates: Capability to help monitor the regulatory environment and provide timely updates to clients.
  • Deal Structuring and Execution: Experience in supporting the structuring and execution of complex deals.
  • Collaboration: Ability to work with strategic advisors (law firms, bankers, and consultants) to help clients optimize their use of capital and insurance.
  • Innovative Solutions: Capability to collaborate with Howden CAP and broader teams to help devise and deliver unique approaches, products, and solutions.
  • Alternative Capital Vehicles: Knowledge in supporting the development and structuring of alternative capital vehicles.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail and the ability to work proactively alone or as part of a team.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with clients and stakeholders.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in MS Office, particularly PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
  • Drive and Energy: High energy and a desire to contribute to creating unique market solutions.
