The Housing and Land directorate is responsible for the Mayor’s plans to deliver new and improved homes and strong communities. Working closely with boroughs and partners, we manage the Mayor’s housing investment programmes and land and property assets to support the building of affordable homes, job creation and regeneration.
About the team
This role is in the Housing Policy team, which is responsible for developing the Mayor’s housing policies, including his London Housing Strategy. In this post you will be working alongside the existing Housing Research and Analysis Manager and a Research and Statistical Analyst to ensure that these policies are informed by a robust and sophisticated evidence base. You will also work closely with colleagues across the wider Housing and Land directorate, and with analysts in other teams such as City Intelligence.
About the role
In this role your work will include:
- Leading on or contributing to publications like the annual 'Housing in London' report and Housing Research Notes
- Drafting briefings for senior officers and the Mayor’s Office, and responding to questions from the London Assembly
- Leading on a range of analysis projects to improve our understanding of London’s housing market, housing needs and housing supply
- Using techniques including coding to develop improved analysis processes and workflows
- Working positively with colleagues in the Greater London Authority and contacts in government and other external bodies
What a typical day will look like
- Creating a data visualisation to illustrate research findings in a report for publication on the London Datastore
- Writing a briefing for the Executive Director on a newly released set of official statistics
- Working collaboratively with team members on a piece of data analysis to inform the development of a new housing policy
- Meeting external stakeholders to present initial findings and gather feedback for an ongoing research project
Skills, knowledge and experience
To be considered for the role you must meet the following essential criteria:
- Awareness of housing policy issues in London and post-academic experience analysing relevant data
- Experience of leading research projects and using different types of evidence and research methods to tackle complex questions
- Ability to develop new analytical methods and workflows using programming languages such as R and Python
- Ability to clearly communicate analytical results to a range of audiences using appropriate methods
- Experience working collaboratively with other teams and organisations, creating inclusive working practices and valuing people from a diverse range of backgrounds.
This role is largely based at London Fire Brigade’s Head Office (Union Street SE1 0LL), with some days at City Hall, Royal Docks (Kamal Chunchie Way, London, E16 1ZE).

Assessment process

GLA staff are hybrid working up to 3 days a week in our offices and remotely depending on their role. As part of this, you will need to split your time between home working and coming into the office. In addition to a good salary package, you will be paid every four weeks, providing frequent salary payments.
