Position

What You'll Be Doing

As a Student Success Tutor for BA (Hons) Gaming, you’ll play a central role in shaping student journeys from Visual Culture at Level 3 through to final projects at Level 6. You’ll provide proactive academic support and personal tutoring, alongside hands‑on technical guidance in Unreal Engine/UEFN and the wider games development pipeline, from research and development to final outcome. You’ll work collaboratively with the programme team and student services to help every learner succeed. This isn’t just about teaching — it’s about transformation.

This is a full time position (5 days a week) and weekend work will be required for this role as we are open 7 days a week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver 1:1 and group academic support to help BA Gaming students understand course material, develop creative and technical skills, and achieve success across Levels 3–6.
  • Provide practical, workshop-style support in Unreal Engine and UEFN, helping students build games and game environments and make effective use of the engine’s tools.
  • Support students through the research and development phases of their projects, including concept, texture and asset work using Adobe Photoshop and Substance Painter.
  • Guide students through the games development pipeline — from research, ideation and prototyping through to production, testing, iteration and final outcome.
  • Support students at the advanced stages of the course with scripting and programming (e.g., Unreal Engine Blueprints, C++ or C#), including debugging and problem-solving.
  • Act as a personal academic tutor, building strong relationships to create individual support and development plans.
  • Identify at‑risk students using data (e.g., attendance, performance, project progress) and implement early intervention strategies.
  • Facilitate SMART goal setting and monitor progress against project milestones and production schedules through regular check‑ins and feedback.
  • Collaborate with well‑being, careers, and academic teams to connect students to relevant resources, including industry practice and professional development opportunities (e.g., portfolios, game jams, showcases).
  • Provide ad‑hoc classroom cover where required, including practical lab and studio sessions, ensuring continuity of learning in the absence of teaching staff.
  • Deliver pre‑prepared teaching materials and facilitate sessions in an engaging and supportive manner.
  • Maintain a positive and inclusive learning environment in classrooms and computer labs, managing student behaviour in line with college policies.
  • Liaise with the BA Gaming programme team to ensure accurate handover, continuity of content delivery, and alignment of support with module briefs and assessment requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records of student interactions, plans, and outcomes to support continuous improvement.
  • Promote an inclusive learning environment that respects and celebrates diverse backgrounds.

Requirements

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Games Design, Games Development, Games Art, Computer Science, Interactive Media or Digital Design).
  • PGCE, QTS, or a recognised teaching / coaching / mentoring qualification (held or working towards).
  • Experience teaching or supporting learners in Further or Higher Education, ideally on games, digital media or creative technology programmes, and with widening participation students.
  • Practical experience of developing games or game environments, with a portfolio that includes work in Unreal Engine / UEFN.
  • A genuine passion for games, with broad experience of playing and analysing games across genres and platforms, and an understanding of how games function.
  • A student‑first attitude and cultural awareness.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems and student support tools.
  • Strong communication, problem‑solving and organisational skills.
  • Proficiency with learning management and student support systems.
  • Cultural competence and commitment to inclusive education and widening participation.
  • Student‑centred ‘can‑do’ approach; calm and credible under pressure.
  • Evidence‑led and analytical, with a commitment to continuous improvement and the values of the Group.
  • Collaborative, inclusive, and proactive.
  • Curious and current — keeps up to date with games, tools and industry trends.

ESSENTIAL - Subject & Technical Knowledge (Games)

  • Working knowledge of Unreal Engine / UEFN: confident navigating the editor and its core tools to support students building games and game environments (expert level not required).
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and experience using Substance Painter for texturing and asset development.
  • Broad knowledge of game design and mechanics, level design, and game art and asset creation.
  • Understanding of scripting and programming for games, and of game engines (Unreal Engine, Unity).
  • Knowledge of narrative design and interactive storytelling, and of user experience (UX) and interface design.
  • Understanding of production pipelines and agile project management, from research and development to final outcome.
  • Awareness of industry practice and professional development routes into the games industry.
  • Master’s degree in a games‑related or creative technology discipline.
  • Industry‑recognised training or certification in Unreal Engine or Unity.

  • Personal academic tutoring and managing complex student cases.
  • Experience supporting diverse and international student cohorts.
  • Knowledge of the OfS regulatory framework and QAA Quality Code.
