The Role:

The Academic Mentor/Student Success Tutor plays a critical role in ensuring that students receive personalised guidance and support throughout their academic journey. This role is designed to help students achieve their academic goals through proactive coaching and support. The Student Success Tutor will create individualised strategies and plans, working closely with students to set and track academic goals, overcome barriers to success, and engage with resources. The role contributes directly to improving retention and enhancing the overall student experience through close collaboration with academic departments and student support teams.

Responsibilities include :

  • Provide personalised, 1 to 1 or group academic support for students in achieving their academic goals. ·Build a relationship with students, to develop relevant individualised personal support and development plans.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with students, ensuring they feel heard, supported, and empowered in their educational journey.
  • Collaborate with students to define specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals (SMART goals) and track progress toward these goals through regular check-ins and adapt plans as necessary.
  • Support students in understanding course material and assignments.
  • Identify and support at-risk students through early intervention, including addressing academic and personal issues that may impact retention. Use data to identify students at risk of disengagement (e.g. low attendance) or academic decline.
  • Implement early intervention strategies to improve retention, such as proactive outreach, tailored action plans, and regular follow-up.
  • Collaborate with other departments, such as well-being and career services, to connect students with the resources they need.
  • Ensure a holistic approach to student success by promoting interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Maintain detailed records of student interactions, goals, interventions, and outcomes. Use this data to report on progress, identify trends, and refine student success strategies.
  • Monitor progress and adjust strategies as necessary to ensure continued academic and personal growth.
  • Analyse trends in student success to help develop effective retention programs.
  • Provide students with academic guidance and feedback on students’ progress and performance and discuss any academic challenges they may experience.
  • Early Identification and Intervention: Proactively identify students who may be struggling or disengaged and take appropriate action to offer support and resources.
  • Ensure that at-risk students are engaged and supported through timely interventions.
  • To undertake other duties appropriate to the grade and character of work as may be reasonably required, including specific duties of a similar or lesser grade.

Qualifications/ Education :

  • Bachelor’s degree in business management, Strategy, Organisational Behaviour, Marketing, Economics, Hospitality, Tourism, Finance, Fashion, Music, Media.
  • A PGCE or equivalent teaching qualification working towards as a minimum
  • Master’s degree in business management, Strategy, Organisational Behaviour, Marketing, Economics, Hospitality, Tourism, Finance, Fashion, Music, Media

Knowledge & Skills :

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to engage effectively with a diverse student population.
  • Active listening and the ability to provide constructive feedback are essential.
  • Problem-Solving and Adaptability: Ability to identify academic or personal challenges faced by students and develop effective, actionable solutions.
  • Flexibility in adapting to individual student needs.
  • Organisational and Time Management Skills: Ability to manage multiple student caseloads, schedule appointments, track progress, and meet deadlines efficiently.
  • Empathy and Emotional Intelligence: A high level of emotional intelligence and empathy, allowing for genuine, supportive interactions with students in various situations.
  • Technological Proficiency: Proficient with student management software, learning management systems (LMS), and digital tools for communication, scheduling, and documentation.
  • Cultural Competency: Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds, respecting different cultural perspectives and creating an inclusive coaching environment.
  • Knowledge of awarding body regulations and the ability to work within these

Experience :

  • An experienced and qualified educator with a background in Further/Higher Education (F/HE) or Secondary Education.
  • Proven expertise in effective learning, teaching, and assessment strategies that drive student success.
  • Holds or working towards a recognised teaching qualification, such as Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), or an equivalent credential.
  • Deeply committed to educational excellence and student development, with a strong focus on supporting learners from diverse backgrounds (widening participation).
  • Skilled in designing and delivering inclusive, accessible, and engaging learning experiences that empower students to achieve academic and personal success.
  • Exceptionally organised, detail-oriented, and proactive, with outstanding communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage students, colleagues, and stakeholders
