Equality and Diversity

Waltham Forest is a diverse borough where diversity is valued and is integral to both service delivery and employment of its staff. The Council is proud of its rich mix of communities and as the largest employer in the area, it works hard to respond to the changing needs of its population. We use our statutory duties on race, gender and disability equality and best practice in respect of age, faith and sexual orientation to ensure equality of opportunity in the workplace. The Council is committed to meeting its 4 equality objectives:

  • Promoting equality of opportunity
  • Opposing all forms of discrimination, intolerance and disadvantage
  • Ensuring our workforce reflects the diverse communities of Waltham Forest at all levels
  • Providing fair, appropriate, accessible and excellent services to all

Respecting Diversity is a core Council value. To support the above and reduce the risk of bias in its recruitment activities, the council is operating an anonymous shortlisting process, which hides personal information that can identify individuals until their application has been considered for shortlisting. The council also operates a scheme whereby, for jobs graded up to and including scale SO2, internal candidates are considered first. This includes those candidates who self‑identify as having a disability for the purposes of the Disability Confident scheme. For more information, please refer to our recruitment and selection policy.

Commitment to Education

A genuine commitment to making a difference where it matters most. A belief that every young person can succeed with the right support. A strong conviction in the transformative power of education.

Role Expectations

We are seeking teachers who prioritise high‑quality teaching and learning, with the ability to adapt and personalise provision to meet individual needs. The ability to teach across more than one subject would be advantageous. Previous PRU or special school experience is not essential. What matters most is a willingness to learn, reflect and develop within a specialist setting.

About North Birkbeck PRU

North Birkbeck PRU is a new short‑term specialist provision for young people who are at risk of exclusion or have been permanently excluded from their mainstream school. The PRU is part of the Hawkswood Group, which provides high‑quality alternative provision for pupils requiring temporary placement outside of mainstream education. We deliver a structured, short‑term behavioural and educational intervention for pupils aged 11‑16. Our cohort includes young people who experience difficulty regulating their behaviour in mainstream settings, alongside a smaller number of permanently excluded pupils. Some pupils will have an EHCP, typically linked to needs such as Social, Emotional and Mental Health.

Across the Hawkswood Group, we are committed to developing resilience, social skills, and emotional wellbeing, with the clear aim of successful reintegration into mainstream education wherever possible. Our pupils are often capable learners who benefit from calm, consistent, and highly supportive adult relationships. Class sizes are deliberately small, with additional adult support in every classroom. We work collaboratively with a range of multi‑agency professionals, including Speech and Language Therapy, CAMHS, and Educational Psychologists. This integrated approach enables us to provide targeted, intensive support for each pupil.
