Waltham Forest is preparing to open its first dedicated Crematorium Service, creating nine new roles across the service. This role is the first leadership position to help shape the foundations of the new provision.

Responsibilities

  • Operational lead responsible for establishing and managing the day‑to‑day running of the new crematorium and maintaining the highest standards of service, safety and dignity.
  • Deliver high‑quality cremation services under the direction of the Bereavement Services Manager, including effective leadership and development of staff, allocation of workload and workforce planning.
  • Manage facilities and create strong professional relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Ensure all cremations comply with statutory forms (Forms 1‑10), maintain permanent registers of cremations and ashes disposal, verify identity of remains before cremation and provide public access to records.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental permits, emissions regulations, the Cremation (England and Wales) Regulations 2008 and all relevant statutory guidance and best practice.
  • Commit to a “Right First Time” approach, accuracy, customer care and a high‑quality public‑focused service.
  • Maintain a high standard presentation of the chapel and public areas.
  • Plan, organise and deliver interventions and actions; oversee a team of seven staff and the cremation process while recording and following legislative procedures.
  • Monitor and evaluate performance and service delivery, ensuring all parties are informed of progress and issues as required.
  • Work within a policy framework and regulatory guidelines, applying knowledge of systems, procedures and best practice.
  • Communicate sensitively with diverse audiences in emotive circumstances and deal with people at all levels confidently, sensitively and diplomatically.

Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent or vocational qualification in a relevant subject or area.
  • Maths and English Language GCSE grades A‑C or equivalent.
  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development.
  • ICCM accredited qualifications.
