Situated in Zone 5, Sutton is less than 30 minutes by train from central London, and south and south west London are easily accessible by public transport. There are 10 train stations which serve key neighbourhoods within the borough providing direct connections to London Victoria, London Bridge, London Blackfriars and St Pancras International. Sutton also has direct rail connections with Epsom, Dorking, Guildford and Horsham, as well as Wimbledon for an interchange with the London Underground and West Croydon for the London Overground. There’s also an extensive road network which provides close and easy access to the M25 and M23.
About The Role And Our Ideal Candidate
We are looking to recruit a dynamic and conscientious individual to join the Kinship Assessment Team and Family Home for Independent Living (Supported Lodging) Scheme as Team Manager – Children’s Social Care.

As a Team Manager reporting to the Service Manager, you will lead the Kinship Team and Supported Lodging Service, ensuring effective service delivery within timelines and budget. You will model best practices, ensure compliance with statutory requirements, and guide your team through complex procedural matters while supporting their professional development. You will manage a dedicated group of at least four social workers, delivering high-quality support to kinship and Special Guardians. Your team will assess connected persons during care proceedings and provide ongoing assistance to approved carers. We value each staff member and promote leadership and exemplary practice.
You will assist the Service Manager in fostering a learning culture through supervision, mentoring, and sharing knowledge. Working within relevant frameworks, you will help reduce the need for services and promote independence. This fast-paced role requires collaboration with stakeholders, including social workers, Youth Offending Teams, and independent providers, to address the needs of vulnerable children and young people
Additionally, you will oversee the Sutton Supported Lodging Scheme (Family Homes for Independent Living), designed to provide a family environment for young people aged 16 and over who require extra support to reach their potential. You will lead staff, ensure young people’s needs are met, manage budgets, and maintain a safe environment while liaising with external agencies.

The ideal candidate will possess advanced knowledge and experience in managing a team, along with a solid understanding of legislation pertaining to children looked after and care leavers. Strong leadership and management skills are essential, as is the ability to motivate and support your team effectively. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are vital for building relationships with stakeholders. Additionally, you should be capable of managing multiple priorities and deadlines while working under pressure. A commitment to early intervention and prevention is also crucial for success in this role
We expect all suitable candidates to demonstrate the following competences:.
- Having a social work qualification and current registration with Social Work England
- A minimum of 3 years post qualification and management experience, demonstrating the development of an advanced level of knowledge
- Experience and skill in leading multi-agency planning groups involving stakeholders, partners, parents, carers & colleagues e.g placement stability meetings, placement consultation/planning meetings
- Experience of management within children’s social care services with specific knowledge and interest in Special Guardianship and Connected Persons
- Experience of working with and managing support lodging.
- Excellent written, verbal, communication and analytical skills as well as an ability to build relationships with practitioners, families and partners.
