Course Structure & Delivery

We offer a flexible, hybrid delivery model that you will help shape. A typical course suite consists of an on-site 2-hour introduction at Sutton College, followed by a series of 3-hour gallery visits. You will have the flexibility to deliver the core curriculum in one of the following ways:

  • Pre-Visit Lecture – a 2-hour talk at the college to provide historical context before the gallery visits.
  • External visits, including the National Gallery, the British Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A), or other relevant galleries or collections that align with your chosen specialism.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborative Course Design: Work with the college team to design engaging course suites that showcase your expertise and attract diverse learners.
  • Expert Instruction: Facilitate high-quality, 2-hour classroom sessions that encourage discussion and critical thinking.
  • Off-Site Leadership: Lead 3-hour guided tours of major galleries, acting as a knowledgeable expert and managing group safety in public spaces. Create a welcoming, inclusive environment where adult hobbyists feel comfortable sharing their views and asking questions.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A degree or equivalent professional background in Art History, Curatorial Studies, or a related arts discipline is preferred.
  • Industry knowledge: Deep subject knowledge is preferred. While prior teaching experience is an advantage, we are primarily seeking individuals with strong industry expertise.
  • Planning skills: Ability to structure a narrative that connects classroom theory with in-person gallery observation.
  • Confident and clear communication skills, with the ability to engage a group in both a quiet classroom and a busy museum.
  • Team player: a collaborative approach to work; you will be part of a supportive community of facilitators.
  • A genuine enthusiasm for making art history accessible and exciting for adult learners.
