About Us
Newham Libraries is an ambitious library service that plays a pivotal role in improving the quality of life of our residents. We work closely with Public Health and other services to ensure that our book stock is representative of and relevant to our communities, encourage Reading for Pleasure for all, develop our Digital Lending offer, build on our innovative Summer Reading Challenge, and deliver a high‑quality library experience. We operate 10 libraries across the borough with extended opening hours and a wide range of events.
Job Description
Part‑time 23 hours per week – Monday to Saturday, including evenings. Salary £30,288 – £31,346 per annum pro‑rata.
Responsibilities include:
- Assisting customers with transactions
- Shelving books and arranging book displays
- Providing digital assistance and basic digital‑skills sessions
- Providing information and sign‑posting
- Running or supporting events and activities, including Under 5s storytimes
- Promoting books and reading
- Supporting outreach activities or resident forums
- As duty manager: opening and closing buildings, taking bookings and payments, overseeing staff activity, and carrying out cash‑up/banking functions
Requirements:
- Excellent customer care skills and experience
- Passion for libraries and a love of books
- Experience in a customer‑focused role (e.g., library, retail)
- Good literacy, numeracy and IT skills
- Experience running activities and events
- Enjoy working with the public
