Newham is an exciting, vibrant inner‑city borough with one of the largest private‑rented sectors in England. Its Private Sector Housing Service leads the regulation of the private sector through pioneering borough‑wide property licensing schemes that protect tenants and landlords by deterring criminal activity.

Our Private Sector Housing Standards team needs a highly experienced Senior Environmental Health Officer/practitioner to work within the private sector housing stream. The role involves carrying out multi‑agency inspections of unlicensed properties, licence condition checks, inspections of properties in disrepair, and other regulatory duties within the private rented sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Expert knowledge of the Housing Act 2004 and other housing legislation.
  • Significant practical experience of serving and enforcing the above.
  • Significant competency in using the HHSRS rating system.
  • Experience carrying out housing inspections for disrepair and property licensing issues.
  • Knowledge and experience of compiling evidence and taking cases to court and the First Tier Tribunal.
  • Carry out high‑standard regulatory work to protect tenants and improve the sector.
  • Mix of casework and project work, supporting tenants and proactively addressing complex problems.
  • Develop professional skills through training opportunities and CPD.

  • Excellent communication skills to motivate colleagues and improve teamwork.
  • Good working knowledge of private sector housing in a local government setting.
  • Flexible and able to work both as part of a team and independently.
  • Manage your own caseload with confidence, decision‑making and problem‑solving ability.
  • Experience supervising people and projects; leading housing enforcement cases.
  • Effective multi‑agency operation delivery and partnership working.
