Newham is one of the youngest and most diverse boroughs anywhere in the UK, with 72% of our residents from ethnically diverse communities, speaking over 220 languages. Our population of 351,000 is growing at a rate of 14%, the third highest rate of growth in London. There is significant growth happening across the borough, with major regeneration programmes in Stratford, the Royal Docks, Custom House, and Canning Town.

As Environment Improvement Manager, you will lead and deliver a range of improvement projects across Street Cleansing, Waste, Recycling, and Parks within the Public Realm Directorate. The role will drive strategic change by implementing our existing Strategy and Policy, meeting new statutory requirements, and delivering ambitious plans to increase recycling, reduce contamination, and support the roll-out of our borough-wide food waste service.

The post holder will shape communications and engagement strategies (with support from Corporate Communications) to:

  • Reduce waste production
  • Promote reuse and recycling
  • Tackle fly-tipping
  • Improve the cleanliness and quality of public spaces

The post holder will manage budgets and lead a small high-performing team, ensuring projects are delivered on time and to the highest standards.

We’re looking for an Environment Improvement Manager to lead innovative projects that make a real difference to the quality of life in our borough. You’ll have knowledge and experience working with front line services along with experience in developing and delivering communications to residents and stakeholders. You also require experience of project management, procurement, and financial management along with staff management. Experience of working within the Waste and Recycling, Street Cleansing, or Parks service areas is essential.
