Highways, Sustainable Transport and Parking Services are universal front‑facing services that all of our residents and visitors interact with. Therefore, it is vital that we strengthen these services and make them as responsive to our residents’ needs as possible. The Senior Highways Engineer role is key to enabling us to achieve this goal, working in a team of professionals delivering major projects for the borough. Highway improvement projects are scattered around the borough, some of which include works within the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Royal Docks and Canning Town area. These are multimillion‑pound projects and Newham will be delivering them over the coming years.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Senior Project Manager in the delivery of projects and work with a team of professionals.
  • Perform highway design using AutoCAD and other relevant software, including level design.
  • Visit sites as required to manage works on site and liaise with contractors.
  • Take responsibility for assigned major highway projects from inception to on‑site delivery and post‑scheme monitoring.
  • Manage day‑to‑day running and decision‑making on key stages with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Work with internal and external project team members, manage staff and project elements at various stages of delivery.

Qualifications

  • Relevant degree in highways design or civil engineering.
  • Graduate with 5+ years of experience.
  • Strong knowledge of highway design using AutoCAD and other relevant software, with experience in level design.
  • Experience managing junior staff and supervising site and external contractors/consultants on a daily basis.
