In recent years we have seen unparalleled levels of investment, growth, and interest in our Borough, but for all our successes, Covid-19 laid bare the endemic inequality that exists in our borough and how now, the Cost of Living crisis is exacerbating that. That’s why we are working towards Building a Fairer Newham, focused on economic security, health, equality and the environment.

About the Role

Newham offers a unique and exciting opportunity to build your career, and as Lead Artificial Intelligence Products Manager within the Digital, Data and Service Design service, you will play a pivotal role in driving the development, evaluation and responsible management of AI-powered tools throughout the organisation.

You will take ownership of the strategy and roadmap for AI products, leading the technical assessment of off-the-shelf AI solutions to determine their suitability for specific service areas, and overseeing their integration into existing systems and workflows. Your remit includes implementing and managing AI applications to ensure alignment with our service goals, user needs and technical standards, as well as leading on AI-related data governance to guarantee compliance with ethical, legal and organisational standards.

You will deliver our AI strategy underpinned by robust policies, governance frameworks and best practice guidance, ensuring safe, effective and transparent deployment of AI across the organisation. About You

You possess a strong understanding of the product management profession and skills, coupled with substantial experience in product thinking and the product development lifecycle. Your knowledge extends to AI and machine learning technologies, with practical expertise in deploying and managing solutions within cloud environments, and a sound grasp of core AI frameworks such as Large Language Models (LLMs), Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), Prompt Engineering, and AI Builder.

You are well-versed in data protection legislation and regulatory frameworks, particularly as they pertain to sensitive and personally protected information, and you understand the unique challenges of service delivery, data requirements, and stakeholder engagement within local government or similar public sector contexts.

You are adept at evaluating and selecting suitable AI technologies for specific use cases, including Microsoft products such as Azure OpenAI, Azure AI Builder, Copilot Studio, and Teams Premium. Your skill set includes accurately identifying business requirements, managing products and services to deliver ongoing insight and value for staff and residents, and translating stakeholder needs into clear technical requirements for development teams.

You have strong negotiation and communication skills, enabling you to influence Council decisions and processes, and effectively engage directors and senior managers to meet evolving performance reporting needs. With a proven track record in leadership and management, particularly within governance and AI-focused settings, you have successfully mentored teams and collaborated with Digital, Data and Technology teams, senior managers, and external partners.
