About the Team
The Public Health team sits within the Council’s Integrated Health and Care directorate. The team covers health improvement, health protection, sexual health, children and young people, health intelligence, substance misuse, and more. Public Health’s purpose is to improve and protect the health and wellbeing of Lambeth residents through evidence‑based commissioning of projects, programmes and services, with a focus on addressing health inequalities. The Apprentice will report to a Public Health Specialist and work across the Public Health team and wider Council and health partner teams as appropriate.
About the Role
If you’re interested in improving the health and wellbeing of local communities while gaining qualifications to support your public health career, this apprenticeship role is for you. The Public Health Practitioner Apprentice (Level 6) combines study with day‑to‑day work within the Public Health team and leads to a degree (Public Health BSc). The apprenticeship includes a 3‑year programme (or 36 months + up to 3 months for End Point Assessment) and requires studying at a pre‑selected university for at least one day per week.
During the apprenticeship you will gain experience across Public Health functions including prevention of ill health, health surveillance and health protection, while working with multiple teams. You will support planning, delivery, monitoring, evaluation, communication and engagement for public health services, projects and programmes. Strong communication, data understanding and community engagement skills are important. You will be supported to meet the learning objectives of the Apprenticeship over the three years.
Eligible candidates do not need prior public health or local authority experience. You should be able to demonstrate how your existing knowledge and experience apply to the PHP Apprentice role. Applications are welcome from Lambeth residents or those living in surrounding boroughs and from candidates who have received Lambeth leaving care services.
Responsibilities
- Gain experience across Public Health functions (prevention, surveillance, protection) and work with multiple teams.
- Assist with planning, delivery, monitoring, evaluation, communication and engagement of public health services, projects and programmes.
- Develop skills in data interpretation and community engagement to support health improvements and reduce inequalities.
- Meet learning objectives for the Apprenticeship while working in Lambeth Council’s Public Health team and with training providers.
Qualifications and Requirements
- No prior public health or local authority experience required; ability to apply existing knowledge to the role.
- Right to work in the UK and, if applicable, appropriate visa covering the entire contract.
- Additional eligibility criteria include meeting UK Government apprenticeship entry requirements and the training provider’s eligibility criteria.
- This is a fixed term contract starting January 2026, for 36 months (or 36 months + 3 months for End Point Assessment); applicants must be available for the full duration.
- External candidates only; existing Lambeth staff are not eligible due to funding criteria.
