About the Role
Reporting to the Corporate Director of Resources (Section 151 Officer), the Director of Finance will lead the council’s financial strategy and transformation agenda, ensuring robust financial governance, reporting and control frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and delivery of Lambeth’s Medium‑Term Financial Strategy.
- Drive a culture of cost consciousness and financial sustainability across the council and partners.
- Act as Deputy Section 151 Officer, maintaining strong financial management and governance.
- Oversee statutory financial reporting, including budget setting and the annual statement of accounts.
- Provide strategic financial insight and challenge to Members and the Corporate Leadership Team.
- Lead on the capital strategy, capital programme and capital monitoring.
- Build a strong business partnering function that supports organisational transformation through robust financial appraisal.
- Promote value for money through improved income generation, commercial thinking and efficient resource allocation.
- Develop leadership capability and foster a high‑performance culture within the finance service.
Qualifications
- CCAB‑qualified finance professional with a strong track record of strategic financial leadership in a large, complex public sector organisation.
- Experience supporting statutory financial responsibilities and contributing to corporate financial strategy and governance.
- Deep understanding of local government finance, governance and statutory responsibilities.
- Experience leading financial planning and delivering transformation.
- Strong influencing and relationship‑building skills at Member and senior officer level.
- Credibility and judgement to operate effectively within a statutory leadership environment.
- Resilience and tenacity to navigate financial challenges in local government.
