About The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join our Transport Planning and Road Safety team as a Principal Strategic Transport Planner. In this role you’ll be responsible for developing and delivering our Transport Strategy, which aims to make travel in the borough healthy, clean, green, safe, efficient and inclusive. Improving sustainable travel is embedded in our new Corporate Plan and you will ensure our Transport Strategy aims and objectives are fully embedded into other council strategies and policies. You will develop our strategic transport policies, lead on strategic transport projects, work with partners to promote and deliver improved public transport services—including new rail links and travel to Heathrow airport—and promote improvements to our bus network to deliver growth and equality. You will keep an eye on innovation and look to the future of how people will travel. You will oversee funding bids to help deliver our capital programme and manage our TfL funding programme. This role represents a fantastic opportunity to work with colleagues across the council to ensure active and sustainable travel is fully embedded into everything we do. You’ll be part of a creative team with values centred on curiosity, making things happen, seeing the bigger picture, collaborating, and achieving positive outcomes.

About The Team You’ll Be Working In

Our Transport Planning team promotes active and sustainable travel within the borough so that our transport network benefits all communities. We work closely with Regeneration and Planning to promote growth, with Environment and Climate to deliver sustainability, and with Equalities to deliver inclusivity. Recent engagement shows residents want a better transport network, reflected in our Transport Strategy and action plans covering walking, cycling and public transport. The team plays a key role in delivering these plans and making transformational improvements for all residents. We partner with external organisations—including TfL and rail operators—to ensure they deliver the public transport services residents want and need, and we collaborate with neighbouring boroughs for seamless travel. We oversee the annual Local Implementation Plan and develop the strategic case for delivering our capital works programme, including walking and cycling networks, bus priority, school streets and other projects that increase sustainable mode share. The team also delivers our school travel planning programme and works alongside the Road Safety team, which manages cycle training and road safety education programmes, to promote active and sustainable travel for children and adults.
