Sessional £18.92‑£20.63 per hour
Work directly with the public at life‑defining moments as part of the Bereavement & Registration Service team. The role is casual and includes registering marriages, civil partnerships, births, deaths and still births; deputising as needed for the Registrar; conducting celebratory services; and ensuring accurate, timely registrations according to statute.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure all births, deaths and stillbirths occurring in the Havering Registration District are registered legally within the recommended timescale and performance targets.
- Register marriages & civil partnerships solemnised at Langtons House and at places of worship and other approved premises; interview couples prior to the ceremony to confirm details and legalities.
- Deputise for the Superintendent Registrar in performing marriages, civil partnerships, private & group citizenship ceremonies.
- Perform renewal of vows, commitment and welcoming ceremonies as a celebrant.
- Book and carry out deed poll and certificate of existence appointments.
- Undertake general office duties, including answering telephones, dealing with reception enquiries, answering emails.
- Prepare and issue birth, death, marriage and civil partnership certificates, ensuring correct fee has been collected.
- Provide the Tell Us Once Service.
- Deal with and complete correction applications in accordance with guidelines issued by the Registrar General.
- Take bookings and payments for all ceremonies and hall bookings, completing and sending all relevant paperwork.
- Attend open evenings and wedding fairs on a rota basis.
- Book and conduct ceremony rehearsals.
- Work on a rota basis on Bank Holidays to cover emergency call‑outs.
Qualifications & Skills
- Excellent communication skills, smart appearance, friendly and positive character.
- Ability to speak confidently in public and understand and apply rules and procedures.
- Competent use of standard software packages.
- Strong organisational skills and ability to maintain accurate records.
- Flexible and able to work weekends, bank holidays and evenings as required.
- Previous registration experience is an advantage.
Additional Information
Under the Births, Deaths and Marriages Regulations 1968, the following are disqualified from acting as registrar: Non‑Discharged Bankrupt, Authorised Person, Secretary of Synagogues or Registering Officer for the Society of Friends, Minister of Religion, Medical Practitioner, Midwife, Undertaker or persons involved in the burial or cremation business or any person engaged in the business of life insurance.
