Hackney’s Children & Families Service are now recruiting an experienced social worker to join our Emergency Duty Team (EDT). Our EDT operates beyond regular working hours. Workers are employed on a shift pattern which includes evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays, providing critical services and support to children and families when it would not be safe, appropriate or lawful to delay intervention.

Responsibilities:

  • Triage all emergency children’s safeguarding referrals received whilst on duty, including collaboration with agencies such as the police and other emergency services.
  • Hold strategy discussions when concerns regarding significant harm arise.
  • Analyse, summarise and evaluate out-of-hours information to arrange interim support, with the aim to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.
  • Take action to ensure the safety of the child.
  • Act as the corporate parent on behalf of the local authority for looked‑after children.
  • Provide support and advice to families in urgent cases.
  • Ensure smooth handover of information to day‑time services.

Qualifications:

  • Social work qualification (or equivalent) and registration with Social Work England.
  • Proven post‑qualifying experience working with Children’s Social Care.
  • High degree of autonomy and flexibility.
  • Remote work capability, with occasional travel to Hackney offices.
  • Alignment with Hackney’s values and a commitment to an anti‑racist, trauma‑informed and systemic approach in all duties.
  • Enhanced DBS check required.
