In the context of the Family’s First Social Care Reforms, Hackney has reviewed its response to extra‑familial harm. Learning from our own Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews, the National Panel’s “It Was Hard to Escape” report and Croydon’s Thematic Review of Serious Youth Violence, we have developed a new team dedicated to working intensively with children most at risk of harm outside the home. This specialist team comprises practitioners from a mix of disciplines, with significant experience of working with adolescents, including those on the periphery of crime who may cross over with Youth Justice Services.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a dedicated team to provide outstanding services for children and their families, adhering to our systemic, trauma‑informed, anti‑racist and restorative practice model (STAR‑R).
  • Deliver thoughtful, focused interventions that help young people develop agency and critical thinking skills.
  • Respond swiftly and effectively to the needs of children while adhering to statutory guidelines.
  • Model persistence, tenacity, creativity, flexibility and the ability to respond quickly.
  • Bring together partners from the wider safeguarding partnership and community to develop creative solutions that build safety around children and in contexts that may facilitate or cause harm.
  • Ensure the needs of children, young people, their families and carers are assessed and that effective, outcome‑focused plans are developed and delivered in accordance with practice standards.
  • Report to the Service Manager for Youth Justice and contribute as part of a leadership team committed to trauma‑informed approaches and tackling unequal treatment of children.
  • Develop innovative and impactful practice that actively contributes to organisational learning and promotes best practice with a clear focus on positive outcomes for children and families.

Qualifications

  • You must hold a Social Work England‑recognised social work qualification or equivalent, be registered with Social Work England and have evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Enhanced DBS Check is required.
