About Camden
Camden is building somewhere everyone can thrive. We’re home to one of the UK’s fastest-growing economies and some of the most important conversations shaping society today. Through ambitious and innovative programmes, we’re delivering positive social change and working to ensure nobody gets left behind.
The role
We’re looking for Design Engineers to join our Highways Engineering Service and help us deliver safer, healthier and more sustainable streets across Camden. You’ll support the development and delivery of a diverse range of highway, traffic, parking, active travel and public realm projects, from smaller traffic management and parking schemes through to larger transport and public realm improvements. Working alongside Senior Engineers, Project Managers and colleagues across the service, you’ll help take projects from initial feasibility through to detailed design and construction. You’ll produce engineering drawings and technical documentation using AutoCAD and other industry-standard software, as well as supporting the preparation of specifications, cost estimates, quantities and contract documentation. You’ll undertake site visits, inspections and surveys and contribute to the design of highway layouts, junction improvements, drainage systems, traffic management measures and public realm enhancements. You’ll ensure that safety, accessibility, sustainability and maintenance considerations are embedded within your designs. This is also an opportunity to make a real contribution to the quality of Camden’s public spaces. You’ll apply urban design principles alongside highway engineering requirements to help create attractive, inclusive and accessible places that balance movement with the needs of communities. You’ll work collaboratively with colleagues, consultants, contractors, developers and public bodies and support consultation and engagement with residents, businesses and other stakeholders, helping to communicate technical proposals clearly to a range of audiences.
About you
You’ll have an engineering qualification at degree level or equivalent, with post-qualification experience in a practising Graduate Engineer position or above, or at least two years’ applied experience as a Design/Highways Engineer or above. You’ll bring a good understanding of highway design within an urban environment, including relevant policies, standards, specifications and design criteria, together with an appreciation of how engineering contributes to wider priorities such as sustainability and regeneration. You’ll also be able to demonstrate experience of designing engineering schemes and working collaboratively with partners and stakeholders. Experience of project and budget management, consultants, public consultation, contracts and procurement will be valuable. Importantly, you’ll have proven experience producing highway designs using AutoCAD, strong problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate technical information clearly and confidently.
Working for Camden
We’re ready to welcome your ideas, your views, and your rebellious spirit. Help us redefine how we’re supporting our communities, and we’ll redefine what a career can be. If that sounds good to you, we’d love to talk.

At Camden, we want every colleague to feel they belong and can thrive. We welcome applications from all parts of our community, and particularly encourage people from Black, Asian and Other Ethnic Heritage communities, LGBTQ+ people, disabled and neurodiverse people, survivors of domestic abuse, and those from lower socio-economic backgrounds or with care experience. We know that different voices and perspectives make us stronger, and we are committed to providing the support, adjustments and flexibility people need to succeed.
Asking for Adjustments
At Camden, we are committed to making our recruitment process barrier-free and accessible for everyone. If you need us to do something differently during the application, interview or assessment process, just let us know and we will support you.
