The Personalised Education Service (PES) sits within Bromley’s Access and Inclusion Department. We are a statutory service providing short-term, interim education for children aged 5–16 who cannot attend school due to medical needs or complex SEND (with an EHCP). We deliver highly personalised tuition in small groups or 1:1, at our centre in Orpington, remotely via Teams, or in community and home settings where appropriate. Our aim is to remove barriers to learning and support children and young people (CYP) to re‑engage with and return to full-time education.

Due to expansion of the service we are seeking a skilled and motivated Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join our team. This is a rewarding opportunity to work directly with children and young people who have a range of needs, including SEND, SEMH, and medical conditions. Many of our students have an EHCP. You will play a key role in delivering high-quality, flexible teaching and learning support tailored to each individual.

As an HLTA within PES, you will support the delivery of personalised education programmes for pupils who may have experienced disrupted education and require a highly individualised approach. You will work closely with teachers, caseworkers and other professionals to ensure that learning is accessible, engaging and appropriately pitched to meet each pupil’s needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver 1:1 and small group tuition, following personalised learning plans
  • Adapt learning activities to meet a wide range of needs, including SEND and SEMH
  • Support pupils to build confidence, engagement and readiness for learning
  • Contribute to planning and assessing pupil progress
  • Provide feedback to teachers and caseworkers on engagement and attainment
  • Support the ongoing review of provision and next steps for pupils
  • Help maintain a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment
  • Uphold safeguarding, behaviour and professional standards at all times
  • Provide education support cover on the Children's Ward in the Princess Royal University Hospital

The role requires flexibility, creativity and the ability to respond to pupils whose needs and circumstances may change. There will be an element of lone working in children’s homes, and the successful candidate will need to be comfortable supporting children 1:1 in the community, this could be a local library or supporting a child with a graduated exposure plan.

About You

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience working with children and young people in an educational setting
  • Holds HLTA status or has significant equivalent experience
  • Has a strong understanding of SEND, SEMH and inclusive practice
  • Is confident delivering learning to individuals and small groups
  • Can adapt teaching approaches to meet diverse and complex needs
  • Builds positive relationships with pupils, families and professionals
  • Is patient, resilient and able to engage pupils who may be anxious or disengaged
  • Works well both independently and as part of a team
  • Is committed to supporting pupils back into full-time education
  • Holds a full driving licence and access to a car as the role involves travel around the Borough
