Support allocated political structure and other Member-level meetings, ensuring that they are accessible and promote engagement with the local community, and conform to corporate standards and legislative requirements.

Support line management in the development and delivery of a programme for Member Development to build the capacity of elected members and promote the aims and priorities of the Council.
Produce agendas, reports and minutes to a high standard, in line with corporate protocols, standards and deadlines.
Use ICT systems, including the Modern.gov committee administration system for the production of agendas and minutes, to enhance the profile and accessibility of the Council's governance arrangements.
Participate in internal Corporate Board and other meetings as required, providing advice on governance matters and making a positive contribution to the achievement of the Council's priorities and objectives.
Provide advice to Councillors, Directors and other officers on governance and Constitutional matters.
Build effective working relationships with Councillors, particularly relevant Chairs and Deputy Chairs and lead/senior officers, by proactively offering independent, evidence-based advice.
Ensure that work programmes and forward plans relating to allocated committees etc. are well-organised, prioritised, focused and aligned with the Council's priorities and that residents and stakeholders are actively engaged and able to influence decision-making where appropriate.
Undertake research and other information gathering to support the delivery of work programmes and scrutiny reviews.
Work closely with colleagues across the Council to support the delivery of services to and on behalf of Councillors and the political leadership.
Work outside normal office hours to ensure that meetings and other work areas are properly supported.
Support line management in preparations for new and emerging areas of responsibility relevant to Governance services.
Special requirements for this post: This is a politically restricted post in accordance with Section 2(1)(g) of the Local Government and Housing Act 1989.
About you: Successful candidates will be educated to Degree level (or equivalent) or have a minimum of two years' local government committee administration experience, and be able to demonstrate:
- Good judgement and discretion working in a political or similar environment;
- The ability to produce written work to a high standard that is grammatically correct and easy to understand;
- The ability to work independently to produce high-quality, evidence-based written work;
- The ability to work constructively with colleagues at all levels and respect confidentiality.

About us: We have two exciting opportunities for individuals with initiative and drive to fill the position of Senior Governance Officer in our busy Governance service. The service is responsible for the administration of Council and internal Board meetings and sits at the heart of the Council, ensuring decisions made are open and transparent and in the best interests of local residents. The successful applicants will be the central point of contact for a number of Council and internal Board meetings, responsible for preparing and publishing reports and agendas, taking accurate, clear and concise minutes of meetings and drafting procedure notes to assist the Chair with the smooth running of meetings. The role also involves giving procedural advice to Councillors, colleagues and the public to ensure compliance with good governance and democratic processes, as well as the opportunity to support the Council's scrutiny process, which influences policy and promotes accountability, and the delivery of local, regional and national elections. Most Member-level meetings take place in-person or at an evening at the Town Hall in Barking. The Council has a flexible working policy.
