Contract Type: Fixed-Term Internship

Working Pattern: On-site, with flexibility to support different LAAT campuses where required

Hours:37.5 hours per week

Job Purpose

The IT Intern will support the day-to-day delivery of IT services across LAAT, gaining practical experience in technical support, Microsoft 365 administration, hardware and software troubleshooting, digital learning systems, asset management, information security and IT service management.

Working under the supervision of the IT Manager and wider IT team, the postholder will provide first-line support to students and staff and help ensure that technology used for teaching, learning, assessment and administration remains reliable, accessible and secure.

The role will also contribute to LAAT's OfS registration readiness by supporting the availability and effectiveness of digital learning resources, accurate system records, appropriate information security controls and timely resolution of technology issues affecting the student experience.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

1. IT Helpdesk and First-Line Support

Provide first-line technical support to students and staff for hardware, software, account and connectivity issues.

Respond to IT queries professionally and record requests through the approved helpdesk or ticketing system.

Troubleshoot common issues relating to Windows devices, Microsoft 365, printers, Wi-Fi, peripherals and classroom technology.

Resolve straightforward technical issues within agreed procedures and escalate complex incidents promptly to the IT Manager or relevant IT colleague.

Support students experiencing difficulties accessing institutional digital services, reducing avoidable disruption to teaching and learning.

Maintain clear and accurate records of incidents, resolutions and escalations.

2. User Accounts and Microsoft 365

Assist with the creation, amendment and closure of student and staff user accounts under authorised procedures.

Support password resets, login issues and basic access or permissions queries.

Assist users with Microsoft 365 applications including Outlook, Teams, OneDrive and SharePoint.

Follow approved access-control procedures and ensure that user permissions are only changed with appropriate authorisation.

Support new starter onboarding and leaver processes from an IT perspective.

3. Digital Learning and Student Systems

Provide basic technical support for LAAT's digital learning and student-facing platforms, including Moodle, Microsoft Teams, Turnitin, SEAtS and other approved systems.

Assist students and academic staff with login, access and basic technical issues affecting digital learning.

Support classroom technology and audiovisual equipment before and during teaching sessions where required.

Escalate recurring or significant technology issues that may affect teaching, assessment, attendance, student engagement or access to learning.

Ensure that access to assessment-related systems is managed securely and only in accordance with authorised permissions.

4. Hardware, Software and IT Asset Management

Assist with the setup, configuration and deployment of laptops, desktops, monitors, printers and other IT equipment.

Install approved software and updates under the direction of the IT team.

Maintain accurate IT asset records, including equipment allocation, location and status.

Support equipment collection, issue and return processes.

Assist with routine checks of classroom and office IT equipment.

Report damaged, missing, outdated or insecure equipment promptly.

Support secure disposal or recycling of IT equipment in line with LAAT procedures.

5. Network and Connectivity Support

Assist with basic troubleshooting of wired and wireless network connectivity.

Develop practical knowledge of networking concepts including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, Wi-Fi and VPN technologies.

Report network outages and recurring connectivity issues promptly.

Support the IT team with routine network checks and documentation where appropriate.

Escalate suspected security or infrastructure incidents immediately.
