Job Purpose
To develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required to become a competent Freight Forwarder by supporting the planning, coordination, and administration of domestic and international shipments.
The apprentice will work alongside experienced colleagues while completing an approved apprenticeship programme.
Key Responsibilities
The Apprentice Freight Forwarder will
- Assist in arranging the transportation of goods by air, sea, road, and rail.
- Prepare and process shipping documentation, including commercial invoices, packing lists, customs documentation, and bills of lading.
- Update shipment records using the company's transport management systems.
- Track shipments and provide customers with regular status updates.
- Liaise with customers, carriers, shipping lines, airlines, hauliers, customs agents, and overseas partners.
- Support customs clearance processes under supervision.
- Help resolve delivery issues, delays, or documentation discrepancies.
- Ensure customer enquiries are handled professionally and promptly.
- Assist with obtaining freight quotations and preparing customer pricing.
- Maintain accurate electronic and paper records.
- Follow company procedures for compliance, security, and data protection.
- Support continuous improvement activities within the operations team.
- Complete all apprenticeship coursework and attend training sessions as required.
Person Specification
Essential
- GCSE Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics (or willingness to achieve these as part of the apprenticeship if eligible).
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Basic IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
