We are currently recruiting for an experienced Transport Planner to join a busy and fast‑paced general haulage operation based in Portsmouth. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to develop their career within a dynamic transport environment where no two days are the same.
The Role
You will play a key role in planning and coordinating daily transport operations, ensuring collections and deliveries are completed efficiently, cost‑effectively, and in line with customer expectations. This is a hands‑on, fast‑paced position where you'll be working closely with drivers, subcontractors, and customers to keep operations running smoothly.
Key Responsibilities
- Planning daily collections and deliveries for a general haulage fleet
- Optimising routes to maximise efficiency and vehicle utilisation
- Managing subcontractors and utilising haulage exchange platforms
- Allocating jobs and issuing clear instructions to drivers
- Monitoring live operations and adapting plans where required
- Liaising with drivers, customers, and internal teams to ensure service levels are met
- Handling inbound calls and resolving transport‑related queries
- Briefing and debriefing drivers throughout the day
- Managing and resolving real‑time operational issues
- Identifying opportunities for cost control and operational improvement
What We're Looking For
- Previous experience in a transport planning role, ideally within general haulage
- Good understanding of UK transport legislation (driver hours, tachographs, vehicle compliance)
- Experience planning routes for a busy, multi‑drop operation
- Confident communicator with the ability to liaise at all levels
- Highly organised with strong attention to detail
- Experience using Transport Management Systems (TMS)
- Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Office
- Ability to work calmly under pressure in a time‑critical environment
- Proactive mindset with a “can‑do” attitude and strong sense of ownership
Working Hours & Salary
- Monday to Friday
- Option 1: 9:00am - 5:30pm (8.5 hours incl. lunch) - ÂŁ27,500 to ÂŁ30,000
- Option 2: 8:00am - 6:00pm (10 hours incl. lunch) - ÂŁ32,500 to ÂŁ34,000
- Occasional weekend check‑ins from home (as required)
